I just gave a bonus to my builder, for a great work ethic.
I saw in his response, the same as I am feeling with your kind comments.

Thank you 91stang.

Hi Rod,

The first stamp appears to me to be Sc. #89a.

This corresponds to SG 125b (although SG only lists this as an imperf pair).

Both catalogues just give unused prices but I don't see any any indication that this was not issued.

The SMYRNE cancellation looks ok to me.

Hello Nigel,
thanks for your sage advice, I was tending towards 89a, but never confident with the background lithography colours of the Ampir sets, Especially the yellow issues.

My circumspection on the postmark, was aided by the format.
Bottom right quadrant is a good Pmk strike position, but the Pmk is conveniently
upside down, revealing date and location. Hmmm.

I do not have enough images of covers of these issues, but in the old days, it was not common for stamps to be adhered upside down, or the letter cancelled upside down.

I am happy to go with your estimation however.

Cursory searches for forged postmarks of Turkey were not sucessful.

Rod

SG refers to the 5 Pi due (D9 in my old catalogue) as running from brown to deep brown. Yours looks closer to pale brown, of which there is an unissued group from 1867, but not with this overprint.
