Quote: Given the 1911 date, I suspect the "star" is the seven pointed Federation Star that exists even today on the Australian flag. Wow. well spotted, never gave it a thought. well done you. The quote was from a reader in 1911, so he had it wrong as well |

Had no idea. That is interesting Rod.
Mailing kiloware outside Australia has been a cost problem for some time now. Am tempted to do kiloware again. There is still good pre $1 issues kiloware at bricks and mortar auctions. Was just looking at kiloware auction lots today. |

https://auspost.com.au/help-and-supportI have always considered it gender neutral. I had a tatty old leather satchel, all through high school, only way to carry your books, lunch, pet frog, cigarette cards, on the pushbike. School was 3 Km each way. Cambridge dictionary. |

There was a distinct separation here. Girls had leather satchels. Boys had army surplus haversacks, of this type - https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/704...21487994162_508814058161_pla-314954651973_c__704685729engb_469727163&utm_custom2=12603379637 although this looks a lot smarter than mine. You could get ex-army (khaki) or ex-RAF (greyish-blue and more expensive). These were personalised over the years with biro, felt-tip and paint. |

Ah! I see, not for us Aussies, we were more advanced, stylish. The satchel for us, Then, when we left school, and went to work, we advanced to the Gladstone bag, that ubiquitous, battered, Swiss safety knife of "Crib" Lunch bags Havn't see one in years, now it's the Hi Vis vest, work boots, and buy your lunch at the lunch bar. https://www.abc.net.au/local/photos.../3717878.htm |

Havn't see one in years, now it's the Hi Vis vest, work boots, and buy your lunch at the lunch bar. Rod, I have six Gladstone Bags. Various sizes and condition. A 'must have' fashion accessory at my local Hash House Harriers club in the 1990s. Satchel is also a fine guitarist with Steel Panther (nsfw). Don't google it unless you can tolerate bad language and jokes in poor taste. |

I did have a briefcase for work (or for some of my jobs), but I rarely used it - was always more of a carrier-bag man (to the amusement of industry smoothies). |

I carried my books to school in the satchel that originally housed my war-time gas mask. As this was well prior to biros, felt tipped pens, etc, it remained unblemished (barring wear and tear, of course) on the outside. The inside, however, evidenced several ink bottle spills. |

You escaped parental wrath, then. My haversack was emblazoned with "James Brown, King of Soul" in white paint on black. Sides were cut with a razor blade or Stanley knife to create a fringe. (The latter technique was also applied to jeans, also to the despair of parents.) |
