There are several threads including scans of Crosby covers. Here are 2:

Crosby is best known for his cachets printed by thermograving which typically included a small real photo. He produced not only FDCs but naval covers and others.

Thermograving is a two-step process where wet ink is dusted with a powder that, when heated, expands to give a sort of imitation of real engraving but without its high initial cost. You have probably seen this on business cards.

Hopefully, you can get some idea of how thermograving looks. It is raised (like engraving), shiny (unlike most engraving), rounded (unlike most engraving) and is not as sharp as engravings.

Just because an older cover is thermograved doesn't automatically mean it's a Crosby cover. There are also covers with tiny photos that may or may not be by Crosby. The little Crosby photos are found detached, so don't believe faked "error" Crosby cachets with the wrong photo.

Thermograving can turn out badly. If the printing ink is applied too thickly, then the final work results in blobs; one more step so more spoilage. So we should appreciate the amount of work that went in to produce Crosby covers.

I have a huge number of Crosby covers, mostly US airmail FDC's, but also several WWII patriotic covers. I've previously showed this one, which is an unusual combination of the two, an FDC using a WWII patriotic cover:

This one is unusual for the special yellow/green border that the USPOD tried out as a standard for special delivery:

Crosby also did dual cachets on #10 covers:

Lastly, some WWII covers:

Well, the first two are FDC's, but the cachet's are WWII themed. The last two are VJ-Day covers, with the two different VJ-Day postmarks.

I have a large number of Crosby FDCs for the 1939 Royal Visit to Canada, the United States, and Newfoundland. This link will get you to the Canadian covers and there are links at the bottom of the page to the US and Newfoundland examples: http://www.glennestus.com/royalvisi...osbycan.html

The number of variants that Crosby would produce for certain issues is often frustrating to a collector. But I don't recall anything like the number of examples Glenn linked to.

The San Diego Exposition cover is a neat oddity, used to mail back rent rather than being an event cover. Was this from Crosby visiting San Diego and paying some bills?? Or maybe just some stamp dealer or collector.

Glenn's Royal Visit/Royal Train cachets are news to me. Canadian collectors see tons of these covers generally, but could you possibly show us a full cover with the flag cancel?

I think it was an accident by the original owner who was into insurance and real estate!
