3Dadeo...*Congratulation* on your exquisit 'RRRRR 678 4d NSW numeral'. 'R' ratings can bewilder, is this one of 3 known examples or a 4th example found ?.

The rarity of NSW numerals is based on the 2012 book by Hugh Freeman.

5R means 1-2 known based on his sample of 5 major collections and subsequent updates.

I'm not sure how many are known. This one would not likely have been listed anywhere before as it came from a large messy lot.

It is interesting that the 4d stamp (as mentioned) is the same as the one in Freeman's book. Even the position of the strike is almost identical.

I've been keeping some sort of track of rare cancellations since Freeman's book first came out and I haven't recorded a 678 in that time.

A side by side for the record:

It was still rated 5R in Freeman's second edition so it's either the 2nd or 3rd recorded strike. The perfs look different to me so 4d DLRs look most likely to produce another example.

The geographical encyclopedia of NSW in 1892 has the spelling as Toolebuck.

A write up of the town is here:

It's nice to know that someone is making an effort to keep track of these cancels.

I will list a few more that may help in that regard. They are not 5R, but they are in the 2R-4R range and came from the same lot.

For those interested, I copied this from the provided link:

The Post Office opened on 1 February 1873 and closed in 1885.

I'm guessing there was one Postmaster during this time and hence the similar placement of the cancels.

Inspired by the recent viewing of the 2015 film on the life of mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan - 'The Man Who Knew Infinity' - here is the smallest number that is expressible as the sum of two cubes in two different ways:

Rod...Your NSW 1d cancellation is very intriguing...reminds me of the Black Dot (pencil blunt end size) cancellation on some KGV 1 Greens. Was the black dot a temporary means of cancellation ?.

Millennium certainly turn up some interesting pieces from time to time.

The 169 of Bundaburra (lot 155) was the pick of the litter for mine:
