Wow, I've enjoyed just browsing this particular thread. The 1972 Greek vase you posted in July is especially noteworthy, in my opinion. |

Albert Schweitzer (1875–1965) was a theologian, philosopher, organist, and physician best known for his humanitarian work in Africa. Born in Alsace (then part of Germany), he later founded a hospital in Lambaréné, in present-day Gabon, where he devoted much of his life to medical service. His ethical philosophy of "Reverence for Life" emphasized compassion toward all living beings. In recognition of his humanitarian efforts and advocacy for peace, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Peace in 1952. Albert Schweitzer, designed by Ingalill Axelsson, engraved by Slania and issued by Sweden on November 20, 1991. Issued as one in a set of four about Peace Nobel laureates which I posted in Nobel prize thread. |

"Only One Earth", engraved by Slania and issued by Sweden on June 5, 1972 to publicize the 1972 Stockholm Conference on the Environment. The design is based on the distinctive folk-inspired artistic style of Bror Hjorth, whose work often features simplified, expressive human figures in harmony with nature, rendered in bold colors and decorative compositions reminiscent of carved and painted wood panels. Rather than reproducing a specific artwork, the stamp presents an original composition in Hjorth's manner, depicting nude figures in a garden-like, almost Edenic scene alongside a swan, symbolizing the unity between humans and the natural world. |

Endymion, a strikingly beautiful youth, variously described as a shepherd, hunter, or king, was loved by the Moon goddess Selene. The Sleeping Endymion is an ancient Roman marble sculpture, likely after a Greek original, discovered in 1783 at Hadrian's Villa (Tivoli) and acquired by King Gustav III of Sweden. Now the centerpiece of Gustav III's Museum of Antiquities in Stockholm, it shows the mythological youth in eternal sleep, embodying beauty, tranquility, and timelessness, and remains one of the most admired works in the royal collection. The museum gallery, with the Endymion statue displayed centrally, highlighting its importance in the collection, painting by Pehr Hillestrom (1732–1816), engraved by Czeslaw Slania, and issued by Sweden on August 21, 1997. Second stamp in the set shows Endymion sculpture, designed by Toni Kurrach, engraved by Piotr Naszarkowski. Both stamps were issued as se-tenant. |
