Going back to the discussion re the 1965 Danubian Art stamp: I must say that my copy does not really look like being printed in two colours. I wouldn't be surprised if it were just a matter of a very light against a deeper and therefore darker coloured engraving. The SG catalogue just calls it 'indigo' without a mention of a second colour.

And here's a monochrome print of the test stamp which made use of the same engraving. Notice how light the background becomes when printed with a lighter colour.

Adrian, you are making a good point there and quite possibly
that's the answer.

So as far as the catalogues are concerned Scott,GB and Austria Netto
Katalog list one colour

Only Michel states there are two.

I would love to have other forum members give their opinion.

I previously mentioned that Franz Jonas who was President of Austria between 1965 - 1974 designed a couple of stamps and here he is himself portrayed on his 70th Birthday in 1969.
At that time the only living person allowed on Austrian stamps
was the the President who was the head of state.
Now every Tom, Dick & Mary gets in their stamps.

Designer : Adalbert Pilch

Engraver : Alfred Nefe

Printing process : 1 colour engraving combined with 1 colour photogravure.

Scott 854

Jonas died in 1974 while in office and Austria issued a memorial
stamp the same year.

Designer : Adalbert Pilch

Engraver : Rudolf Toth

Scott 997

Franz Jonas also designed this 1965 stamp.
The 50th Anniversary of the Union of Austrian towns

Engraver : Georg Wimmer

Printing process : 1 colour (black) engraving combined with 3 colours photogravure

Scott 753

Yes Classic Coins I agree with you about that stamp
having "Exquisite detail"
Great, sharp scan by the way.
I would say that time mid 1970s to mid 1980's
Austria produced some of the finest engraved stamps.

The one you showed is one of a set of three issued for the 25th Anniversary of the restoration and
re-opening of St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna.
Yours is Scott 1055 not 1057, here are the other two.

Designer : Otto Zeiller

Engravers : Alfred Fischer (3S) Rudolf Toth (4S)

The 3S was also printed in a smaller format via 2 colour photogravure.
These were issued in rolls (coils) of 2000 but also sheets of 100.

lithograving - Special thanks for your meritorious work on this monumental set characterized by the unique unity of style both in design and engraving representing the 9 federal states of Austria through 3 memorable scenes in each of them.

Much obliged!

Cheers,

Glad you liked the scans Florian.
I think having the frame printed by photogravure really worked
with these definitives.

This set below was issued to promote the Austrian National Library.
It was one of the first efforts by the Austrian State Printer
to combine multicolour photogravure with 1 colour engraving.
Not really a good comparison with the Czechoslovakian
total multicolour engraved die stamps for sure but not bad either.

Designer : Adalbert Pilch

Engravers : Alfred Fischer (1.50S) Rudolf Toth (1.80S,3S) Alfred Nefe (2.20S)

Printing process : 1 colour engraving combined with multicolour photogravure.
