The intention of this thread is to provide a useful resource for anyone who needs help identifying the village/town/city on a New South Wales postmark. I will start with one that you might be able to help me with:

Can you assist with any text strings you think may suit? There are 179 Postmarks ending in "ON" our given I am having trouble with any other 2 -3 letter mixes Any suggestions I can run my database.
Example : "AD" only match would be LADY DON
Having trouble suggesting how many letters in the string? Arc would suggest 8 ?

I had Croydon as a possibility the "O" and the "D" looked out of place as if they were transposed. Searching Premier Postal, I had no luck finding an early c1904 CROYDON Pmk example. Pmks can make fools of us all. |

Thanks Bobby De La Rue. Quote: the "O" and the "D" looked out of place as if they were transposed. They certainly do! |

I searched through my collection for a Croydon and only have the previous circular datestamp.
Hopson and Tobin say the one shown by Fairdinkumstamps was in use from 1900 to 1907.
It was a busy office. 98,472 letters were posted from Croydon in 1892, a figure that would've certainly increased by 1904. |

Quote: Hopson and Tobin say the one shown by Fairdinkumstamps was in use from 1900 to 1907. What do they say? Do they remark on the transposition of the lettering? Premier had a 1904 Croydon Pmk, but stated that was "unframed" A busy office, one would think there were more examples floating around. If the letters were transposed (I doubt it) that would be a remarkable Postmark impression. |

Unfortunately they don't go into any detail - just the date range of use.
I agree, the letters do look transposed. The trouble with common postmarks is they don't get near enough the attention as the rare ones do! |

I have compared it with the example from the Bruce collection and the positions of the elements match perfectly for Croydon. I wonder how common these were, given the poor example in the great Bruce Collection. |

I looked at Ken Moore's sold listings but never thought to look at the Bruce collection The fact that the 1904 example isn't a numeral is interesting. |

Hi Rod, Bundaburra was closed in 1861 so it can't be that office. There appears to be evidence of a barred numeral to the left of the datestamp. If we take the BUND, then the only PO open in 1899 with a barred numeral is Bundanoon. Unfortunately I don't have an example of the datestamp to compare, but the type fits in with Hopson & Tobin, which has an earliest date of 1899. Hope this helps fairdinkumstamps |

Hi Bobby I figure it is a 10 letter fit, ergo had to be BOBUNDARAH OR BUNDABURRA BUNDANOON appears too short.
But, I have an open mind, Postmarks can make fools of us all.
Trying to see NOON at the end, sometimes I can see a possibilty, then I see URRA.
Note: BUNDABURRA now BUNDABURRAH ( I read in one article, but...............)
Bundaburra's nearest post office is WEELONG situated at 3.9 miles distance. Few more postoffices around Bundaburra are as follows. WEELONG 3.9 Miles / 6.3 KM. JEMALONG 8.7 Miles / 14.0 KM. BUNDABURRAH 9.8 Miles / 15.7 KM. BEDGEREBONG 10.8 Miles / 17.4 KM. CORINELLA 11.3 Miles / 18.2 KM. WIRRINYA 11.7 Miles / 18.8 KM. CARRAWABBITY 12.7 Miles / 20.5 KM.
