Nice find fairdinkumstamps

The first decade of the 20th century is fertile ground for NSW postmark collectors. Lots of scope for earliest and latest dates of use, depending on the device type.

Caveat that I know nothing about these postmarks and have none of the pertinent literature.

Looking at the 1909 Gravesend example, I note several features:

Small break in bottom of D
Rimbreak
"S.W" with small circular period more distant to the rim than the large block period of 1930s.

Perhaps a matter of not having enough of the literature data shared here to bring me up to speed, but with a gap in the record from 1907-1913, is this possibly a new discovery? If not, how do the damage features progress over time? It there evidence of repair or replacement?

Nicely spotted John,
with Western Australian Study group, members ID and catalogue
such varieties in wear of postmark hammers. Colour as well etc.

Same with Victorian postmarks

I'd think NSW would be similar.
FDS will no doubt educate us on that point.

Hi John,

For New South Wales, gaps in the record for smaller Post Offices are the rule, not the exception.

In some cases the device remains unrecorded, and others only one or two strikes are known.

The 19th century devices were made of softer metal and would've been more liable to wear or damage.

Exactly! Progressive wear/damage can be a valuable tool to identify changes in devices and when the letter spacing is nearly identical between two consecutive or concurrent devices.
I have found such to be useful with US railroad postmarks, with the caution that tracings in the literature (especially the US RR's) often "correct" damage such as rim breaks and rim dents/dings versus using photographed/scanned images.
It would be interesting to see scans of Gravesend postmarks from 1913 and shortly afterwards.
All quite interesting!

Collectors increasingly realise that there's more to philately than mint stamps.

Prices are very healthy for rarer postmarks - some lots in yesterday's Phoenix auction selling for 4 figures. See sold prices here:

I saw those results FDS and archived them for reference.

What we have is at least two VERY serious collectors for the ultra rare material, of which most of those datestamps are.

The Norwood was particularly interesting to me as it is a Blue Mountains postmark. It's the old name for Bilpin.

This looks like one of the White R28 Registered types.

Cancelled at Quirindi, NSW, I wonder if anyone has any similar examples to show?
