This thread is for posting your US 1847 issue stamps, either on or off cover. This is Scott #1 and #2, including all varieties, of course.

There have been some prior 1847 issue threads -

There are also these pages, which are a work in progress:

I'll also link Bill Gross' 1847 Siegel Sale here as it can serve as a good reference for these. Also his earlier sale.

rlsny - Nice page. I have for a long time been wanting to start collecting the 1847 proofs.

spqr - Wonderful cover. Machias, Me is pretty close to New Brunswick, but not quite a cross border cover, unless bootlegged.

Collecting the 1847's on cover used from every state possible, is one common way to collect these. Also from somewhat obscure towns.

These were the first official US stamps, but pre-payment via stamps was not yet compulsory. Much mail was still sent un-paid, or pre-paid stampless. So a lot of areas either didn't have stamps, or didn't have many stamps.

That's a beautiful #2 ! Just gorgeous. Thanks for sharing.

The last two covers posted are particularly scarce to rare, due to their destinations: New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. Finding covers from the US to Canada with the first issue stamps are always a nice find. There are, however, a fair number of them. Finding a cover to one of the Canadian Provinces, however, ..... or two ...very tough items to come by.

Foreign destinations are another way to collect these on cover.

I've got lots more to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia

This is a favorite, it originated in Liverpool and was carried out of the mails by the Cunard Line Cambria to New York and then a forwarding agent mailed it to New Brunswick. ex-Wagshal

Here is my one cover. Folded letter is dated 10/17/1849, and is requesting shipment of goods.

Here are my #1's. The second two are a 1a and 1b. The 1b has a recut frameline on the left, so I presume it is from the 5th printing.

These are my two covers. It's a shame someone removed the top stamp on the 2nd cover.
