rlsny - Nice page. I have for a long time been wanting to start collecting the 1847 proofs. spqr - Wonderful cover. Machias, Me is pretty close to New Brunswick, but not quite a cross border cover, unless bootlegged. Collecting the 1847's on cover used from every state possible, is one common way to collect these. Also from somewhat obscure towns. These were the first official US stamps, but pre-payment via stamps was not yet compulsory. Much mail was still sent un-paid, or pre-paid stampless. So a lot of areas either didn't have stamps, or didn't have many stamps. |

That's a beautiful #2 ! Just gorgeous. Thanks for sharing.
The last two covers posted are particularly scarce to rare, due to their destinations: New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. Finding covers from the US to Canada with the first issue stamps are always a nice find. There are, however, a fair number of them. Finding a cover to one of the Canadian Provinces, however, ..... or two ...very tough items to come by.
Foreign destinations are another way to collect these on cover. |

Quote: Yes, I definitely deserved that. I've got lots more to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia This is a favorite, it originated in Liverpool and was carried out of the mails by the Cunard Line Cambria to New York and then a forwarding agent mailed it to New Brunswick. ex-Wagshal |
