'Some of the single-lined 2 paper supplied was highly surfaced, as evidenced by Hutson's example postmarked 18th December 1863 at Corowa. He states this stamp is perforated 12½ but how could it be the same gauge (which is actually 12½-12¾) used in various colonies (eg: Trinidad, Bahamas) from mid 1863? No printings on this paper were done in London and Sydney did not have a 12½ gauge machine. The only suggestion I can offer is the stamp is perforated 12½-13 but happens to measure 12½ on all four sides. The perforations surely could not have been faked, as there is a fragment of the above stamp at the top left still attached.' I'm very confused about this matter. I have about 80 copies of the 2d blue De La Rue, and a considerable number, including a few with single lined 2 watermark, are perforated 12 1/2, and a previous owner of the stamps marked them thus on the reverse. Whether or not Sydney owned a 12 1/2 gauge machine, the end result is that the stamps ARE 12 1/2. I upload a scan of one of my copies, watermarked single-lined 2. |

Hi jimjamtwo,
For many years as I'm sure you know, Gibbons have used "perf 13" to denote perf 12½-13 for stamps issued prior to 1888.
I have some that gauge 12½, others that gauge 12¾ and others that gauge the full 13.
Hutson clearly believed that his example was perforated with a different machine. I for one would love to know the basis for his belief! |

Bobby De La Rue, taking another look back at this great thread I wonder if you have a numeral 3 rideout machine cancel on a De La Rue stamp to show and also if you have examples of the three 1891 blue specimen overprints to compare to your 9d images above? |

fairdinkumstamps, This would be considered very rare (Abacus 243, lot 470), and no, it's not mine: Images of the blue specimen overprints on the 1891 surcharges are available via the Millennium (McCredie Lot 50) or Abacus (Prestige 181 Lot 1274 - Bell Collection) websites. I don't have examples of them in my collection. 64idgaf, While it's not my place to discuss what a dealer should or should not ask for material, I can tell you he's asking $150 (assuming we're talking about the same dealer). I paid $13 for my 1 shilling without the specimen overprint back in 2017. The image you show is much nicer condition than my sheet. They are very fragile and also not common. I do have both the 6d and 1/- cutouts with the specimen overprint. Juzwin has both sheets with the specimen overprint for sale for $75 each but, by the description, not in as nice condition, but still better than mine. |

No idea who Dubois is. Many top flight collectors like to remain anonymous, as is their want. |
