Nice find.. In 1885, a Frenchman, Jean-Ferréol Guigues, and a Swiss, Paul Quartier, arrived in Counani, claiming to have detected an important vein of gold in the mountain. The two form a company, and appoint Jules Gros, journalist and member of the Geographical Society, secretary. They had the idea to sell shares in the gold mines of Counani in France, and to make a fortune.
The republic was proclaimed in this territory on July 23, 1886. Guigues was appointed president of the Council and Paul Quartier minister of public works.
It adopts a motto: Liberty and Justice http://timbresetlettres.blogspot.co...counani.html It is interesting to note these stamps inspired the Katanga series.. A forger was therefore inspired by the old fakes of the Republic of the Counami by repeating
completely the "design" and by changing only "COUNANI" by "KATANGA". We

I have never heard of Counani. Interesting reading! If left to my own devices, I would have considered stamps of Counani to be analogous to the stamps of Rattlesnake Island, or any one of the other 'self-declared' entities that 'issued' stamps. Whether THEY thought of their stamps as real or not is almost irrelevant - they would need to be widely recognized as valid for postage for me to hold them in higher regard. Of course, your 'line in the sand' may be different.
After all, there are people that make all kinds of wild 'statements of fact'. For me, it comes down to what the wider population considers the truthfulness of the statements. Otherwise, I would consider such statements as fiction, delusion, or hyperbole (or, out and out lies, purposely and strategically made to deceive). Could the stamps of Counani get mail delivered somewhere? Within Counani only? Maybe it could be considered a 'local'. Could they get letters delivered to, say, England? Then they might be bona-fide postage stamps. As always, YMMV. |

Looking at Wikipedia, there were two Republics of Independent Guiana (Counani): Republic (1886–1891), and Free State of Counani (1901–1904). Your stamps are from 1893 so, if Wikipedia is right, those are indeed Cinderellas. Wiki also states that the second period did issue stamps. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Repub...ndent_Guiana |
