Don't know if it's part of the grill, but the imprint looks to be the same depth, and the edges line up.
"O**E_B"?
The impression is also as apparent as the grill is when viewed from the obverse.
Thank you as always.

The letters on and off the grill have zero relationship to the grill.

No, but they, the letters, seem to be impressed from letterpress type. Who, when and why are not answers I have.

I will say this just for fun, a blind printed impression would identify a stamp and as such work as an "ownership mark" as in stolen from so-and-so as in the manner of the much later perfins. But if such was the case, with all of the thorough and long study of the 1869 series, such would have come to light.

I am not one of those professionals. But I will say, the color is amazing on the stamp; which the natural straight edge, tear and crease do not detract from. The part after the semicolon was added to assist others from not needing to point them out if I just complimented the color. Yes there are folks like that waiting in the wings, fingers at the ready.

Cool! I'll keep it in the collection then, and research it. Might be something neat.

I thought I was the only one that noticed that It's the same thing in the coin forums.. many are eager to publicly devalue something when monetary value was never part of the OP's question! I've never understood that type of behavior, but it certainly does exist.

It happens most often in threads where people are 'treasure hunting' with multiple threads where they repeatedly think they have rarities.

The replies get snarkier and the number of people willing to help falls off the longer it goes on.

Stephen, are those nail tweezers you're using to pick up the stamp? If so, best avoided.

keep in mind that blind cancels have been seen on 1st & 2nd issue revenue stamps of that period. bringing up the possibility of illegal reuse. the cork cancellation is a period postal one.

I think they're okay! I press down relatively hard and it doesn't leave a mark.

Sounds cool though. I'll go through my revenue stamps of this period to see if there's anything similar.

I feel like that's okay only if the user starts getting aggressive towards people that are giving sound advice in defense of WHAT THEY THINK is valuable (blinded by their delusion). Or if they come back asking the same types of questions and it becomes repetitive like they're not actually listening.

Hope nobody feels that way about me. I've learned a ton from being in this community for just a short time. Very grateful!

I think it is a question of 'time investment'. Some folks only have a limited amount of time to invest in online community assistance. Then there are some folks who assist others to 'show off' just how much they know. There are even some who post because they like to argue or troll others online. And there are some who are truly benevolent or some who are not willing to suffer fools.

My point is, many online communities have a wide diversity of personalities with a myriad of reasons they post. It is a public square and tolerance, from all parties, is a virtue.

over the years I have owned a few embossed cancels on revenue stamps, one die was so sharp it caused a letter to drop out of the stamp. I have not seen this used on postage stamps. I would also suggest not using tweeters as stamp tongs.
