Post a scan of a 'non lake' version laid on top of the sheet so they can be viewed side by side.

What book lists all the classic US plate block numbers?

I took a picture for comparison and they both are the same color, so it is a regular $681 thanks

Classic Plate Block numbers - a list can be found in Durland which lists all plate numbers associated with a particular Scott number. It can be purchased from the US Stamp Society or from the APS.

I do not think that Durland lists plate numbers by 'color variety' (please correct me if wrong, working from memory). Stamp Smarter's complete list of all plate numberd (which includes a unique and very useful 'reverse lookup by plate number') also does not list color varieties. https://stampsmarter.org/features/P...ockHome.html

Don is correct in saying that Durland does not list by color varieties.

You could check the various databases of the expertizing service to see if any plate blocks of lake or carmine lake have been certified and the plate number of such blocks.

Note: since no comprehensive census has ever been done, knowing any existing 'lake' plate numbers would neither confirm or deny the OP's sheet.

It would only then be able to say that 'it is known with XXXXX plate number'.

681a is a VERY rare bird. Siegel has only sold one single in their entire history and the PF has certified one single and one plate block, plate number 19838 with an offset of plate number 19840 on the reverse.

The lake color is likely a result of just one press run. The USSS (United States Stamp Society) does not have among its research papers of press information, one covering this 1929 issue.

For comparison 643 tends to run as a (dark) carmine rose but is listed as carmine rose.

The best place to do the comparisons for color on between 681 et al is the lines of color in the sky. Ink density variation is less there and less likely to impact the perceived colors.
