Mr Ian,

The collection may have more value to you and your family in the future given it is inherited than its market value or that of any one stamp. Is it family heritage?

Collecting for the enjoyment of collecting, whatever that might be, is the name of the game. Don't hesitate to ask questions especially if you need basic information and especially more advanced sources of information for any possible topic. You should be able to find folks on this board a little further along on their collecting journey glad to share experiences.

My personal bias is a used stamp loses the story of its journey in the postal service when it is removed from the cover it transported to its destination. Collecting postal history adds a whole new aspect to your journey in our hobby.

Wishing you many enjoyable future days in our hobby. Russ

Yes, it is collectible. But it is a poor stamp, part of it missing.
Welcome to the forum, and show us some more please

Peter

Hello. 1d blacks in decent condition - four clear margins around the design, clear cancellation - go for around 100 (more if a scarcer printing). Unfortunately, yours has only three margins, the fourth side is badly cut, affecting the design, and there's a crease down the middle. It will probably sell on eBay, but only for a fraction of the price a good copy would attract.

I don't get it. That's what, 35? Why not save up another sixty quid for an undamaged one?

Whom knows what motivates collectors to pay for their desires?
Providing they are well informed on what they are purchasing,
then it is democracy at work.

Some people just want to fill gaps in their albums cheaply I presume.

This is true, but it's a false economy isn't it?

I'm with Geoff. Save up if you can and buy a nice sound example.

Having the first printed stamp is indeed such a gap.
