Below Russia #40 in the standard Scott catalog is a statement that forgeries exist in both used and unused condition, but no mention is made, and no illustrations are given regarding how to distinguish good from bad.

Can any students or experts of Russian philately shed light on the subject and provide images?

You need a member with Fournier Catalogue
(Perhaps vert Laid paper?)

Rogdcam is the "go to" with Russian

Not listed in worldwide forgeries

Morning All - Fournier did a great job with the paper for his Scott 40 forgery but as always the devil is in the details. Below are images of a genuine 40 (top) and a Fournier forgery (bottom). When you see the two together and focus on the eagle and in particular the post horns it is obvious which is which. If you just had the Fournier by itself you could be fooled for sure.
