Allan Poe 1949 stamp. Will appreciate much if anyone could tell me what is the VA.(17 print on the stamp. Is it a cancel,postmark or some sort of area code? Any other details about this stamp will be appreciated too.Thank you.

It is part of a cancellation. Scott catalog no. 986.

Yours is a partial impression of a common style of roller cancel often seen on parcel post mail and other types not requiring a date. There is a good chance yours in from Richmond, VA. Here is a more complete example to show the lay-out of the town, state and device number.
