Is this a known variety? What caused this?

We'd need to see the rest of the stamp as this looks like an ink splatter, but it could even be part of the cancellation. From the picture, it appears to be Scott 183A, or ACSC 196. My ACSC does not list this as a variety, though there are always new ones being found, even from 94 years ago. (Note that there were a total of 364 million printed of these in 14 different printings.)

Additionally, here is a closeup of just the top of one of my Scott 183A. I found a ductor-blade line, but you can also see that the lettering is very poor, in general, on this issue.

Not from a cancellation as the stamp still has gum. The image is from under a loupe. I found it mildly interesting and wanted to ask.

Australia is known for issuing many, many stamps as CTO (Cancelled to Order) for collector sets. On Scott 183A, this would be a small, possibly light strike on one of the corners of the stamp, and you would still have full gum on the back. I don't have a copy of 183A as a CTO, but ACSC says that it exists, hence my request to see a scan of the full stamp.

However, as you can see from my partial scan, this stamp has loads of production issues, so I would characterize it as normal.

Thanks for posting.

From the scan, I cannot tell if the color of the ink on the "d", frameline and top part of the "3" is the same color as the stamp design, so Partime may have been alluding to that possibility.

There are many folks that specialize in studying possible flaws like this, as there are books dedicated to this area.
