1 folder for engraver may be too much.
Perhaps it could be done with a folder by groups of engravers, for example :

American area (USA, Canada, Latin America, etc)
British area (UK, Ireland, British Commonwealth, etc)
France and French area (France, SPM, Ex-colonies, etc)
Germanic area (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, etc)
Italian area (Italy, San Marino, Vatican, etc)
Eastern Europe area (Poland, Hungary, Russia, Czech Republic, etc)
Oceania area (Australia, New Zealand, etc)
Asian area (China, Japan, etc)

jorgesurcl I think that might work even though some engravers
worked on stamps for various areas.

Also we would have to fit Spain, Portugal & Greece into one
of those folders/threads.

I would suggest instead of Italian area (Italy, San Marino, Vatican, etc) call it Southern Europe area
(Italy, San Marino, Vatican, Spain, Portugal, Greece )

We both forgot about Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland.
Northern Europe area I suppose.

Would also have to include Iceland, Greenland, Faroe Islands etc.

What about a separate folder for the great Slania ?

Folks,
There are a number of considerations in trying to organize existing threads and posts into a new forum. Some tasks are easy while others are not feasible. For example, while we can easily move an entire thread from one forum to another, moving individual posts is not.

The best solution will be to add a new sub-forum under the existing "Stamp Production Process Forum". If you guys want to maintain individual threads (i.e. one for each engraver) that will be up to you. We can move existing threads into the new sub-forum if desired.

The new sub-forum will be put into place tomorrow.

Thanks Adrian! Great work you've done here.

I've added this index to the other two in my preface to the stampgal's original post in August 2010.

As I've said before, this is one of my favorite threads on SCF.

I found this French cinderella on a club exchange sheet but have no idea when it was produced or who engraved it. I thought I could see a name hidden in the design but that was probably wishful thinking. Does anyone recognise this?

Hi jjarmstrong47

I don't know if you are aware of it but
Adrian (AKPhilately) started a thread called
Who engraved this stamp? in the
Stamp Engravers Forum which deals
with unknown engravers.

This is the closest thing I have found.
It is a tourist-card with Cinderellas from Paris.
According to this sheet is from 1964...

However in this other it appears with postage meter from 1956...

Reverse...

Maybe it was issued for several years in different colors.

Thanks Lithograving. I have some other queries so I'll add them there.

Thanks Jorgesurcl. I think you are correct about the colours. I'll list it as 1956 until I get a better date. None of them appear to be signed which seems unusual for French engravers. The quality is excellent so it wasn't just a cheap souvenir job and your set probably had several different engravers.

Good morning everyone!

I have a couple of questions about the Australian engraver ERM Jones.

First, did the M stand for Murray?

Secondly, from somewhere I heard that the One Pound Jimmy stamp was originally engraved by Frank Manley (the 8 and 1/2d value), and then re-engraved by Jones (2/6).

Is this right?

Hi Strider
This one had me flummoxed for a while as the catalogues list E.R.M and Murray. There was only one Jones engraving for Australia. E.R.M. used Murray for preference and so he somehow got listed both ways. As for "One Pound Jimmy", both values were designed by Frank Manley and engraved by E.R.M. (Murray) Jones. Your query has done me a favour as I've just realised that after I found all that out, I still have him listed two ways.

edit: It gets even more confusing as the stamps he did for Papua New Guinea are often listed as M. Jones. It was still the same person.

By the way, if you have any of the 2/6 Jimmy stamps it is always worth checking the watermark. The normal stamp sells for a dollar at most but if you find a reverse watermark they are worth about $5000. The watermark is sideways anyway so you are looking for one that looks like this from the back.

I'm hoping that Florian can help with this one.

Karel Freidrich Seizinger is only listed in Gibbons as engraving up till 1951 when he did a UN issue. He lived until 1978 but nothing is listed for those last twenty-seven years.

I've been discussing this with AKPhilately and he tells me that Seizinger moved to Holland and worked for Enschede and was not popular in Czechoslovakia.

Today I bought four of this 1964 set from Ethiopia which show Ethiopian religious leaders (SG573-7). They were designed by Afewerke Tekle who was Ethiopia's leading artist but were produced by the State Printing Works in Prague. No engraver is listed but they all have Seizinger's characteristic "S" somewhere in the design.

I can't think of any other engraver who fits this. Did Seizinger return to Czechoslovakia after Enschede? Did he work anonymously which kept him out of the catalogues, but still added his trademark "S". If so, there may be other stamps waiting to be attributed to him. You can see the "S" sitting on Salama's shoulder in this one but it is in a different place on two of the other stamps I have.

jjarmastrong - The 1964 Ethiopian set showing religious leaders (SG573-7) was engraved by Jindra Schmidt, who normally used to sign his engravings Jindra S rather than with his full name but on occasions (such as https://goscf.com/t/9106&whichpage=105#259000 , where appears) he used his initials JS, or just an S in the vignette ( http://www.cpslib.org/pages-large/1946-L17.htm ).

Just try and look for his initials on the 1951 airmail set of 4:
http://www.cpslib.org/pages-large/1951-L33.htm : S on the extreme right of the vignette
http://www.cpslib.org/pages-large/1951-L35.htm : S on the extreme bottom of the vignette
http://www.cpslib.org/pages-large/1951-L36.htm : JS between the two trees on the right
http://www.cpslib.org/pages-large/1951-L34.htm : JINDRA S upside down in the upper part of the tree on the left

Kar(e)l Friedrich Seizinger (1889-1978) is known to have engraved only two stamp designs while working for Joh. Enschede en Zonen NV:

1949 Portugal: 16th International Congress of History and Art, Scott # 711-712: Angel in Coimbra Museum
1951 UN offices in NY: Scott # 2,11: UN Headquarters Building

Otherwise, he is reported to have worked on the engravings of banknotes for Syria, Indonesia, Netherlands New Guinea, Netherlands Antilles, and Suriname and to have ceased his official engraving activities in 1962. For more details, see an article "Skoro zapomenutα osobnost - Karel Seizinger" by Rudolf Fischer in "Sbornνk Poštovnνho muzea 1982".
