lithograving - Many thanks for replacing your splendid images of the French stamps. Their equals (like those of Austria, Scandinavia, etc.) nowhere to be found, what a pity if they had been lost for ever. Far from being computer-literate as I am, I have never imagined it could be so hard to put them back again for an experienced poster like you. I am very sorry for you. Pretty hard luck. - Adding separate folders for individual engravers? In (a) separate thread(s)? Would that be a time-saving solution?

jjarmstrong47 - I can see that I have run much the same course in stamp collecting as you have. I do not despise used stamps. I still keep a memorable selection of my earliest collection of W/W stamps in used condition, rehoused about 50 years ago, by country, arranged symmetrically but without frames and descriptions, onto about 500 cartridge paper album pages, which are a pleasure to return to.

stamp_nut - Many thanks for the beauty of your images of Belgian stamps. - At nearly 81, happy to be still alive and kicking, I can't afford to change my varied activities and habits and devote my time (as well as my limited reserve funds) to learning new tricks, especially when an occasion like my second-ever celullar phone having broken down recently has put me to a number of difficulties trying to operate a new device. Even if it is not the latest sophisticated model, I am still grappling with its functions.

Nice to hear from you again.
As you say those French stamps are splendid examples
of the art of stamp engraving.
Every time I saw those miserable trashbucket logos instead
of stamps it would bother me and I decided that I would try
to revive those posts.
So far I've only replaced my missing images on
pages 174 to 179. Lots more to do.
It isn't really hard to do but it is quite tedious, lots
of cutting and pasting.

I'm not going to do any more on here though until we finally
decide what do do with this thread.

A brand new engravers thread as suggested by graphis?
Or leave it the way it is as jjarmstrong47 suggested?

I would go along with starting a new thread but only
if it had sub or separate folders for engravers.
At least for the main ones.
The way it is now makes it difficult to find anything
even though Adrian has spent all that time making that list
on page 218 for which we all thank him.

I wish more members would chime in and comment.

So it would be possible to have a thread with subfolders for each engraver? That sounds great, and I wouldn't limit it to just the famous few, if there's no need for that. But how would the notification system work? Would you be notified in which subfolder to look, or would it just say that the main thread has been updated with a new post, leaving us to trawl through umpteenth folders to find that new reply somewhere?

This thread will always remain here so none of the information will be lost, which is essential. I could always end the thread with an updated list of engravers mentioned in the thread, to make it easier to find them. And then we could maybe close it down with no further replies possible (if we can do that), referring instead to the new thread.

I just threw threw that out there to see if there was
any response here as to what should/can be done.
I don't know if the Admin would go for that or if it
was even possible to do.

I spoke to graphis offline about this and he suggested
having separate threads for each engraver.
This would work but it might also stifle the flow in
conversing about engravers in general
and we end up just posting pics.
And the threads would be scattered all over the Topical Stamp
Collecting forum? Where do you find anything then?
Unless the Admins add another Engravers forum.
Would they? There are already so many forums (too many?) on SCF.

Adrian, I have to say that the Rubens stamp looks bland, washed out, lifeless.
Did Broux use a computer to engrave this?

I read on some site which is apparently prohibited on here
that the SS was printed via engraving & typography.
Was the portrait done in typo perhaps ?

Rubens apparently did quite a few self portraits mostly paintings I believe.
I'm not sure but it's possible the stamp is based on this engraving.

Another interesting fact is the low print run at 63,407 souvenir
sheets.
Even so I wonder how many of the stamps will be used
to actually mail letters.

lithograving...that's one fabulous stamp!...just added it to my 'want list'..thanks for posting.
Sure beats the current Belgium issue..which I don't care for at all.

Yes I think Falz did a great job and it is just about
the best looking engraved German stamp IMO.

1 folder for engraver may be too much.
Perhaps it could be done with a folder by groups of engravers, for example :

American area (USA, Canada, Latin America, etc)
British area (UK, Ireland, British Commonwealth, etc)
France and French area (France, SPM, Ex-colonies, etc)
Germanic area (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, etc)
Italian area (Italy, San Marino, Vatican, etc)
Eastern Europe area (Poland, Hungary, Russia, Czech Republic, etc)
Oceania area (Australia, New Zealand, etc)
Asian area (China, Japan, etc)
