I found this cover in a box lot I purchased. The postmark is what caught my eye. A search using AI indicated that the postmark was a first day postmark to commemorate the centenary of the Royal navy submarine service. I think it was odd to have the Jolly Roger representing the Royal navy and I know better than to completely trust AI. Can anyone confirm or deny the information? Also, can anyone provide the Scott number for the stamps? My catalogues are not that up to date. Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.

The Jolly Roger was last flown by an RN submarine when HMS Conqueror returned to Faslane, July 1982, after sinking the "Belgrano". Looks like that one had crossed torpedoes; this postmark's probably more a tourist thing. Penzance is a fishing port in Cornwall, which fills up with emmets in the summer.

Its a postmark from the town Penzance in Cornwall. The jolly roger graphic plays into the comic operetta 'The Pirates of Penzance' which is the first association that most people have of the town. The town does have a few genuine links to seafaring and privateering though.

To celebrate the centenary of the Royal Navy Submarine Service, Royal Mail issued a set of stamps named "Flags and Ensigns" as well as below stamp book and a prestige stamp book, on 22 October 2001. The set included a Jolly Roger as flown by submarines.

Someone sponsored a first day cancellation for Penzance, in Cornwall. It appears that person connected the Jolly Roger to pirates and pirates with the Gilbert and Sullivan opera "The Pirates of Penzance."

This cover has nothing to do with the issue and appears purely philatelic.

There's a page on Flags Of The World giving a rundown of RN submarine use of the Jolly Roger.

Yer tiz- https://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/gb%5Esubm.html

So the flag in the stamp book represents ten merchant vessels sunk (the white bars), maybe a boarding (the cutlass), and some other maritime violence.
