It appears to have been used as a revenue stamp.

Could you do a photo of the back with a light shining sideways so the embossed parts are in shadow and easier to read?

Might be a security measure used by a private firm or ????

Mossel Bay is a popular oceanside spot going way back. I'd guess this purpose is akin to a perfin, but in any event, I think it is interesting.

Hi,

I think it is write "Mossel Bay"... not Moose Bay... sorry!

It may be "Barry & nephews" ... (great entrepreneurs, Bank note...)

I add a picture of "H/B arry &..."

Thank you!

Embossed revenue from a large Cape Merchant House.

A keeper!

Not sure if they are connected,
but surprising to me, prior to 1845
the staple export from the Cape Colony was wine and brandy,
then overtaken by wool.

cdnum,
your best bet would be to find a South African specialist,
indeed a Cape specialist that dabbles in revenues,
I would think this is a very specialised field.

I can show you an "embossed revenue" from India
that at least illustrates how they were applied.

Usually if these cancels were printed they would
have 3 tiny cirles with dates eg: 3 then 4 then 1876 etc
giving the date 3rd april 1876
These Indian embossed only have one circle,
in this case "31"
They are just used to prevent the stamp being reused.

These are contracts between labourers and employers.

A couple more examples of embossed cancellations on India - both government embossings:

The second is inscribed Stamp Office Calcutta/Collectorate.

(Colours aren't true: I tweaked the contrast and brightness, to try to bring up the embossing)

If either of you would like one/both, drop me an email, and you're welcome to them. Well outside my collecting area ('collectorate'?)
