Could that alleged 4-ring cancel be a smudged 3-ring later cancel such as that below? |

Yes, I agree. Not mine though. I was selling a friend's stamps last year and kept a lot of pictures of things I hadn't seen myself. Nice to learn from. I almost did it for free as I was getting to handle and study stamps I would not have seen otherwise. Everyone won. |

David, I was born in Ottawa, my parents are from Cornwall. (dad had 14 brothers and sisters, mom had 7) I have cousins and aunts and uncles living all over eastern Canada. everywhere in Ontario and Quebec (some in Montreal proper, most a bit south in Chateauguay and other neighboring towns. |

really, Cornwall? All my relatives who live there say it's the pits. When I was a kid, coming across the bridge into Cornwall, you always knew you had arrived from the smell of the mills. I must admin, to me it was a pleasant smell, because I knew I was home. but to everyone else, Cornwall stunk. of course now all the mills are gone, so it has cleaned up a bit, but I have heard it is still very depressed. |

Hi Puzzler
Your cancellation on the 2 cents Quebec tri-centennial from Toronto is what is called a "3 - Ring Orb" cancellation. This is not particularly my field although I do have a few and there are postal history collectors out there who specialise in them.

Hi Edwin
I'll try to keep this posting short. The "G" overprints were a "Federal" overprint and valid all across Canada for governmental use, provincially and federally. Offices such as the Ministry of Transport, military and even the RCMP could use these stamps.
To the best of my knowledge, there were not any provincial overprints but there were perfins available for provincial government use such as "LA" (Legislative Assembly) and PS (Province of Saskatchewan just to name a couple.
Interesting thread
