Many albums have a header for each country. In that "space", there are holes for a flag, a coat of arms and sometimes places for their famous rulers.

Question: Where are you supposed to get these things? I really don't want them, but I'm guessing that back in the 1940's/50's, Scott probably sold sheets of the country flags/coats of arms, etc. so that you could add them to your album.

The few that I've seen in the wild look pretty tacky.

Dunno. Just a curious, trivia-type question. Thanks in advance.

I have seen them around but I can't remember where

Jay Smith & Associates has a bunch of individual coats of arms/rulers/flags for sale on his website, but he also gives a little bit of background about these labels:

http://www.jaysmith.com/Specials/Ci...Of-Arms.html

I've found it a little ironic that publishers would boast that spaces for these were included, even in the iconic "Brown" Scott Internationals. I suppose it was part of promoting the educational aspects of the hobby.

Wow 1840...

EXCELLENT LINK!! You confirm that it was the Album publishers pushing this.. (DOH)

On the other hand, he's charging $8 for each country flag. Great work, if you can get it!!

The album maker and stamp dealer H.E Harris used to have these available to buy.

Here is a page of Canada flags and coats of arms on ebay now from seller waddell.jim that he says was published in 1974:

Salut Le Prince, that's from H.E. Harris back in the late 70's. 150 flags but it's outdated, there's been some change since then. Check the price on it. I couldn't fit the whole sheet in the scanner. It has been folded to fit in a regular glassine... I don't know how I got that or maybe it was my sister back then. Never used them. Daniel

As an alternative solutioin, why not track doem a stamp with the flag on and one with the coat of arms? Almost all countries have done this by now. Or even better, maybe - start a topic collection of these for every country . . .
