This Lithuanian 1 lita stamp (Sc #819b) is from a se-tenant pair of sea fauna stamps issued on September 16, 2006. It depicts the Atlantic, or European sea sturgeon (Acipenser sturio). From wikipedia, "This sturgeon can reach 6 meters (20 ft) in length and 400 kilograms (880 lbs) in weight, but a more common length is 1.25 meters. They can reach an age of 100 years." |

Here is Lithuania's March 3, 2007 one lita stamp (Sc #833) showing the municipal coat of arms of Svenicionys, a small, old town in the eastern part of of the country. The second pic shows the original coat of arms from 1845. The etymology of both the fish on the arms, and the town name itself appear to be "lost to history". From heraldry-wiki.com, "After the town was annexed by Poland in 1920 the arms were changed; the knight (representing the province of Vilnius) was removed and the fish were placed above each other. After Lithuanian independence these arms were officially granted on September 16, 1992." Cancel is light Klaipeda (Memel) 2007. |
