Cut square (corner of envelope) postal stationary (envelope) preprinted. er, imperforate, see below
From some Spanish or Portuguese speaking country.
Very Nice cancel and margins around stamp.

Portugal king pedro 5 1853-1861 a very involved stamp it would seem I am going for gibbons 23 (deep rose) "curly hair" and "double lines" I am reading two dies for the 25 rei yours appear to be die 2 (the pearls do not touch the outer oval) In die 1 the two "R's" of correio are closer together than die 2 |

yes Rod I think you might be right about "double lines" 23 Puzzler I think is right too about it being cut from an envelope or stationary..Does that still make it a "stamp" in the stamp sense of the word..lol |

57 would indicate the office number which accepted the letter for posting. An area or a town. |

Gord, you should go to your first post here, select the "edit reply" button and rename the post thread topic to something like "Portugal 1856" so that we can search the scf database when another pops up for comparison. |

There are some up on ebay now from a Spanish seller. Search for Portugal Pedro. Because yours does have large margins and a nicely placed, readable cancel it would price higher than a 'regular' copy. Also the cancel itself may make it ordinary or very rare. For example in the Canada specialized catalogue (do not have Portugal, sorry) the cancels from that old a period are listed and priced according to rarity. The larger cities and offices being less rare and the smaller cities with less usage being the hard to acquire ones in good shape (as yours is). Worth checking on the cancel somehow. |

Bravo Gord. In 20 years SCF will be an amazing database. (if not already)

As for being a stamp or not, I originally thought and posted that it was an embossed postal stationary pre-printed on the envelope (lettre) kind of stamp, BUT looking on delcampe.net I see that it is rather an imperforate type of stamp that was embossed most likely as a security measure to prevent forgery. |

Yours is not yellowed like some of those. But it is dirty from something. Not sure if you should soak it or beware on ink that runs in water (aniline).
154 years old now so wow!
