The small city of Krumau/Krumlov lies on the rugged banks of the Moldau in the southern part of the Czech Republic. The town and its Castle, begun in the 13th century, are a UNESCO world heritage site. The footbridge in the photograph leads to a very impressive structure: the many-storied pedestrian viaduct which crosses the dry moat and connects the parts of the castle. The small bridge in the stamp of 1932 is shown in the old post card.

(Hello Jose, The drawings by Francoise Peyroux for the UN stamps are so timely now - the complete set is on page 10 of the Refugees thread. K.)

A few Böhmen and Mähren stamps have already appeared here on the thread, they were issued for the period of German occupation, from 1939. The artist Vondrous did these from the perspective of standing on the Karl's Bridge looking toward the Hradschin. Nowadays the bridge is quite crowded with pedestrians at almost any time of day. Prague lies quite a ways down river from Krumlov.

The Czech Republic issued a special stamp in 2010 in honor of the artwork involved in making beautiful stamps. J. Kavan and M. Ondracek made the Karl's bridge the foreground feature of their stamp. Nepomuk was the first figure (1683).

The set of Czechoslovakian stamps honoring personalities in the medical field had one stamp showing an Asclepius staff held high in front of the Karl's Bridge, 1962.

Up river to Krumlov again; the stamp of 1993 shows an aerial view of the Moldau meander and the main bridge. The smaller bridge leading to the pedestrian viaduct between the parts of the castle and mentioned yesterday, is covered in part by the swallow, but can be seen in the photograph.

Back down the Moldau River to Prag - the stamp of 1953 is of rather poor quality but shows what appears to be the statue of the sainted Belgian Nun Lutgard's vision done by Matthias Bernard Braun in 1710.

We are still in Prague - many bridges cross the Moldau, and the Karl's Bridge is the most majestic and most easily recognized.

This particular view from the south is most likely on the engraver's thread, but it deserves to be here as well (1967). In the lower right-hand corner are symbols of what you can enjoy as a tourist.

Further east, in what is now Slovensko/Slovakia lies a small city Mala Lodina next to the river Homad. The rail viaduct crosses the long lake filling the valley behind the dam. The stamp of 1955 is part of a set praising engineering and construction achievements. Diesel and electrical engines have taken over from the steam engines of those times.

(Alexey, I agree. K.)
