It's another image of the meeting on the Elbe on the ruined bridge in Torgau. Happy Victory Day -- 9 may!

The Berliner Luftbrücke or bridge in the air is surely the highest 'bridge' ever constructed. Thousands of cargo planes flown by allied pilots supported the population and the troops of Berlin from June 1948 to May 1949 during the Russian blockade of the city. Everything from coals for heating to candy for the children was flown in via three corridors and several altitudes. From the 12th of May, 1949, the number of flights could gradually be reduced because the blockade was gradually lifted.

Photographs of the monuments in Berlin and Frankfurt.

Everyone knows that Venice has innumerable bridges. Which of them is shown in this painting from the 13th century? There is wonderful detail in the painting - even the winged Lion is there, where it still stands today. The stamp was issued to commemorate Marco Polo's departure for China.

The Tower Bridge was one of several well-known London sites sketched in the stamp for the 1980 exhibition. Today one sees a new one, the Shard, looming behind the bridge (photograph June 2017). The Tower Bridge, which was opened in June 1894, is an engineering marvel; it's worth looking up the details.

Austria drew attention to the 11th Congress of bridge builders in 1980 with a stamp showing an ancient and a modern bridge construction.

(Hi, Alexey, Yes it was a lovely vacation in L. Do you know what happened to Jose's scans - I can no longer see them on my screen. K.)

A very similar design was used in 1974 for a stamp of Finland which honors their department of road and bridge engineers.

In 1980 Guatamala celebrated 100 years of rail service with a tall viaduct. I found the scan of the viaduct at Mazatenango, and it looks quite similar to the one on the stamp.
