Hi All

I am wonering if there is any source where I can find information on old German postmarks?

I have a few 1000 old common German definitives that cannot be traded simply because every one else has an example as well. So, having said this, I figured I would mount all of my old German cancellations in a separate album. I was always interested in the old postmarks anyway.

I have many of the old "Germania" heads, and "Large Shield" and "Small Shield" definitives and others I want to put to good use in my collection by identifying the old postmarks.

What I am wondering is, is there a source of postal archives that would give me a listing of post offices in existence with opening and closing dates w/o buying expensive books?

I am also doing this for my Belgian cancellations too.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot

Chimo

Thanks Bobgggg

I will look into this site.

Even a fake cancellation would be nice to have in the cancellation for reference sake.

Bujutsu, did you ever find the information you were looking for? I have a lot of old German stamps and am considering doing the same.

There's a German postmark database at StampsX. I'm not sure how thorough it is, though (and it's in German).

I have a lot of the relevant literaure as well, so feel free to post scans and I'll see what I can do.

There are also lists of Post Offices in 30 or 40 small British colonies, including locations and opening/closing dates, at:

http://www.pbbooks.com/cr1.htm

Here is a very brief excerpt from the Jamaica list:

Albany Station 1904 18n17 76w50
Albert Town 1902 18n17 77w33
Alderton 1908 18n18 77w13
Alexandria 1859 A27 18n18 77w21

In each case, the last two entries are latitude and longitude.

The StampsX.com resource is extremely comprehensive. It's well worth spending the time to work out how to use it.

That StampsX.com site is AMAZING. After using Google Chrome translator to translate the page to English (my German is fair but not that good) it was really easy to figure out the search database.
