An option for you to consider until you can find black backing paper is buying something like Supersafe Mint Sheet refill pages ($8.75 for a package of 12 from Showgard) and cutting the black archival polypro backing to size.
I tested the concept with a U.S. self-adhesive and believe it will work for you -- the stamp stayed in place on the backing and I was also able to remove it without causing any damaging.
Mounting PSE stamps was discussed some time ago and I thought wt1 had a clever solution. He got scissors from Michael's craft store that cut an edging for the white backing that looks sort of like perfs. He had a scan of the result near the end of this thread:
The Bestine trick opens up even more questions... A self adhesive stamp that is no longer self adhesive? Does it now have gumless gum?
Trimming a shelf adhesive stamp to the perforation edges to place it in a black mount... does that affect the value of the stamp and make it less desirable to other collectors? Has the stamp now gone from superb to just barely fine, tumbling in value?
Does trimming a backing in any way affect the stamps value?
I avoid this whole problem by sticking my adhesives directly in my album. It's not a good practice if I were collecting them for value, but I'm not. And I wasn't happy with the alternatives (for what I wanted) so yeah. I finally did it, and it was a relief. And I felt like it was a small revenge on the postal system for doing such a nasty thing to collectors. Which is ridiculous, I realize. And if somebody has nicely trimmed a self-adhesive for me, I'll keep the backing. I just have no desire to give myself a panic attack trimming around die-cuts on stamps when I want the adjacent stamp as well.
I agree that we don't know if the stamps will be devalued in the future if they are re-glued to a new backing. We don't even now if the current glue will destroy the stamp, as has been suggested. I personally plan keep three copies. Here in Canada they stamps are issued in booklets. I will purchase two booklets and then:
- Keep one booklet whole, This will be the "mint" copy of the stamps, kept exactly the way they it was issued.
- From the second booklet, take a copy of each stamp and remove its glue. I have not decided wich method I will use for this. Probably I will stick it to a paper and soak it. This won't be mint anymore but it will be just a proactive measure, in case the glue is really bad for them.
- From the second booklet, take a second copy of each stamp and attach it to a black backing paper with its original glue, just because I would like to display them in stock-books, like the OP, for my own personal enjoyment of the stamps.
- If I have extra copies of the stamp in the second booklet (sometimes there are only two of each kind) I might trim the backing paper around it and keep a third copy of the stamp with the original backing paper.
So my question would be, has somebody found a source of the black backing paper that the OP was looking for?
