Here's another batch of Cuba stamps dated 1898/1899 that I can not find in my Scott's catalogs. Whereas Scott's has a tendency to place an image for each type of stamp (or, if they are like commemoratives, tell you the name of the person or place for each denomination) I can't find these. Are they counterfeit? Thank you all!

I believe these were prepared but not issued. (There was a period of U.S. military administration from 1898 to 1902, or so, and that is probably a big part of the reason.) |

Again, thanks, Cjd. Really! Not issued? How did you know that and where might I get more info on them? Once more, I suspect these will be handed down to my son who will hand them to his and so on until around 2350 AD after which they might be worth a dollar. Assuming humans are still around and haven't nuked each other off the planet. |

I don't know how high they go, but there are several higher values, as well.
Whether they make it to the peseta values, I do not know. The immediately preceding series might be some indicator of likely values.
My only Edifil is the simplified Spain and Colonies, and it doesn't mention them. Byrum might...I can check that later. |

Listed in Forbin as Revenue stamps 1898. I have never seen one cancelled. |

I've never seen one canceled, either. The Witt cinderella collection includes them with Cuban revenues, but cites Forbin as a source, so I don't consider that to be independent confirmation.
I'm going to go check Byrum and see what might be there.
[edit: Not in my copy of Byrum...its looseleaf, so you always wonder if you're missing anything.] |

Note: To offer the best identification, images should be of each stamp, in decent appearance. Stamps with inscription 'CUBA POLICIA' were first issued in 1877. Almost every year a new serie was issued up to 1888. The year is always indicated in the design of the stamp (except for the stamps issued after 1882). http://catalogue.klaseboer.com/vol2/html/cuba3.htm |

The Cuba January 1898 is a series of 8 revenue stamps issued during the Spanish American war, I do not have any used copies in my collection but it is easy possible that some are used for some purposes during stamp shortages. The issue is called Timbre Movil or general revenues, mainly to be used on documents. The 1 cent with letters belong to the set of 8, all 7 other stamps are having numers, values issued are 1c., 2c., 3c,. 4c,. 5c,. 10c,. 15c,. 25 c, They are listed in Jones and Rodrigues catalog edition 1998 as CG22- CG29 The design consist of the Arms of Spain with the Escutcheon of the House of Bourbon, surmounted by a royal crown and supported by the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece in an oval. perforated 14.2 Value of each stamp is $1 or less. Similar stamps are issued with on the top Cuba replaced by the Philippines (Actual FILIPas). There are 4 values known and listed in the Warren catalog under W 262-W265, same issue date and the 1 cent also has the value in letters, see scans below. |
