It should be noted that the steps from design die to printing plate by transfer roll for lathe work engraving were different than that for regular engraving because of the use of white lines in lathe work engraving rather than the use of black or colour lines in regular engraving.

Black Line Engraving has four basic steps:
I) Design Die (reversed sunk lines on design die),
II) Transfer Roll impressed on design die (unreversed raised lines on transfer roll),
III) Printing Plate impressed by transfer roll (reversed sunk lines on printing plate),
IV) Paper Sheet impressed on printing plate (unreversed raised lines on paper sheet).

White Line Engraving has five basic steps:
I) First Design Die (reverse sunk lines on first design die),
II) Second Design Die impressed by first design die (unreversed raised lines on second design die),
III) Transfer Roll impressed on second design die (reversed sunk lines on transfer roll),
IV) Printing Plate impressed by transfer roll (unreversed raised lines on printing plate),
V) Paper Sheet impressed on printing plate (reversed sunk lines on paper sheet).
