Hello- This cancel, apparently from a train leaving Reims, appears to me to be different from the typical ondule/scallop TPO cancels. I've included a more-familiar (to me) TPO cancel below for comparison. Is this just natural variability in the courrier convoyeur cancels, or is this something different? I'm seeing a series of arcs meeting at points, nearly. If it has a different name, I'd like to go searching using the new term. Thanks for looking. Collin

Anthony, thanks, fascinating site for a budding marcophule marcophile ! like myself. CJD, the cancel looks like a 10-sided Convoyeurs Ligne type (under the heading Aid to Identification by Type (Forme)) but so far I have not found a likeness to yours. Also fascinating that France had heptagonne (7-sided) cancels. Looking on Delcampe also but getting distracted by all the nice cancels much too much. |

Anthony, I think it is a train cancel, based on the "Reims a ______" structure. It matches everything else about them, except it seemed less "wavy" and more "pointed" to me...might just be the nature of the strike.
That site is nicely put together, and is a great resource. |

Quote: marcophule Doesn't that just describe us to a "T"? If that wasn't intentional, it should have been... |

This is on Delcampe entitled: Convoyeur Type 2 - Cormicy Ă Reims sur EPCL Semeuse 10c Some parts of the cancel are rounded and some are more pointed seemingly. Perhaps this is due to wear or how the cancel was struck? |

Thanks for the picture, Puzzler; I agree that some of the waves look like points. Until a better explanation comes along, I'm going to guess that I have a plain old TPO cancel that just looks a little different. |

Another from Delcampe I didn't have time to post earlier. I think it is the same, just looking at these. Also called a Type II or T2. |

Just showing off, a new acquisition, Port Taufiq (tawfik, taufik) Governate of Ismalia Port on the Suez Canal. Joy is a nice Postmark. (If anyone can shed light on that particular TPO service, it would be appreciated) |

Nice map showing the railway to Ismalia, talking about the Turkish attack on the British forces in WWI along the Suez Canal. http://www.1914-1918.net/suez.htmDoes not show Tauriq, Taufiq, but where is that, on the way to Cairo from Ismalia perhaps? edit: Oops, I mean PORT Tauriq Taufiq, must be on the canal somewhere? (spelled it wrong, no wonder I couldn't find it). |

Goodness, that's a ripper link Puzzler, thanks a bunch, nice Map. Port Taufiq is at the very entrance to Great Bitter Lake somewhere near "Serapeum" on the map, on the Eastern side,Hmmm I got that terribly wrong. Entrance to the red sea, at Suez, so I am guessing late mail, etc to and fro, would have been railed from Alexandria, to expedite either through the Mediterannean, or via Brindisi. I think we stopped there on the way to Australia, when we immigrated. Port Taufiq is a very common postmark for mail from ships going both ways. Your map explains the rail line, I had long wondered why mail would have been loaded / unloaded at port Taufiq, It is becoming clearer. |

Love those military maps with all the important defensive landmarks pointed out. Here is (on Delcampe) a postcard booklet of pictures along the canal, including 'Port Tewfik', which is probably the same. 'Suez as-Suways Carnet Album 12 vues Port Said El Ferdane Port Tewfik Lac Timsak Ismalia Canal' http://www.delcampe.net/page/item/i...guage,E.html |
