I agree on the "Erie PA" guess.

Did someone say Special Delivery.
The backstory: I usually study an area before diving in. I was studying info on SOTN and, before deciding what to collect, this showed up on ebay starting at 9.99. I placed a placekeeper bid of 9.99 while still deciding the extent of my collection. Ended up deciding to limit a SOTN collection to early commeratives and Airmails thru C24. But, nobody else bid on this one, so now it is here.

I have found it VERY hard to find SOTN cancels that meet my criteria. The must have a clear complete date and enough of the city and state to definitely say where they were used from. Plus they must be within 1 year of issue but not first day. Also, no New York City. Too many of them from NYC and that would get boring.

Usually in the USA, the post office has seperated the postmark from the cancel, so seldom does the postmark (mailing city and date) end up on the stamp, as usually that is the purpose of the cancel. In europe, I know they are usually one and the same so clear, readable cancels are more common.

Here in the case of Special Delivery stamps, the special delivery fee stamp being placed to the left of the postage stamp may explain why SOTN cancels are more common on special delivery stamps.

Some very nice date cancels from everyone.

Personally, given the same stamp, I would prefer an off-center but still legible date cancel to a more centered but less detailed cancel 90% of the time with exceptions for rare or usually well centered cancels.

For me, date cancels add an extra layer of appeal. They let you know where and when the stamp was being used - not to mention that with certain issues they can be helpful in identifying varieties.

Oops. I hadn't seen this thread before I started one in the Back of the Book section. I'll move my pics here and ask to have that thread deleted.

These are items I've added to my website and database in the last week.

I'll start things off with this R84c. Red cancels always make for nice contrast, especially when combined with an off-color manuscript cancel.

The stamp on this one is FUBAR, but this is a lovely example of an early American Express or Adams Express cancel. I think it's the former, but am not entirely certain.

Steel die handstamps make some of the crispest, sharpest cancels found on 1st issue revenues. About the only thing comparable are the printed cancels. I already have an example of this one, but this new one is nicer.

I'm a sucker for 1862-dated cancels...

Diamond Match Co. There are only a few companies known for using triangular cancels, and this is one of them.

Always an in-demand favorite with collectors and dealers alike: Walker & Taylor, located in Chicago, IL.

Is anyone seeking redemption?

Some coal for your stocking...

Not too many early Florida revenue cancels out there.
