revenuecollector, I love those revenue stamps you have been showing and the cancels too of course.
If I were younger and had more cash I think I would pursue some of them.
I never paid any attention to these BOB items until I saw your excellent scans here and on the other forum. |

Thanks, I'm glad you like them.
The thing is, you don't HAVE to go budget crazy to find nice socked-on-the-nose revenue cancels. You wouldn't believe the number that I find for less than $5, and in many cases $1 or less, in dealer inventories at shows.
Many of the stamps themselves only catalog 35 or 50 cents, so dealers will think they are getting a huge markup by pricing them at $1. Now, realistically speaking, many at that price level are going to be worth no more than that, BUT... you get the right cancel, especially crisply struck and in a contrasting ink, and that can turn a 50-cent stamp into a $15-25 item.
Yes, there have been certain fancy or ornate cancels that will command hundreds of dollars even on 25-cent stamps, and I've paid that for a few of the rarer cancels in my collection, but you can build quite an attractive cancel collection for only a few dollars a stamp.
Be careful of getting "the bug" though. :) You'll inevitably want to get some of the larger denominations, which are physically larger stamps, which make for huge engraved canvases for well-struck cancels. There's something about a 1.5-inch by 4-inch engraved stamp with a well-placed cancel from over 150 years ago. :) |
