Since the German collectors prefer SOTN, could it be that the SOTN's were selectively saved over the years, and the non SOTN were discarded.

I was reading a website recently from a specialist for Berlin stamps.
He was of the opinion that stamps with upright, clear, dated cancels, showing usage in Berlin at non-philatlic post offices were worth Michel catalog values. Stamps with mute, undated cancels should have no value and be shred.

That would explain a lot. Boy, they can send them to Canada, some of us like mute cancels.

I believe this one counts, although it is upside down. To me, it's a pretty nice cancel on a pretty nice stamp with some value. Please correct me if I'm wrong on the information. Am I right on the date?

Sweden, TPO cancel from 1877

P.K.X.P. stands for Postkupéexpeditioner, which translate more or less as Forwarding Mail Van.

Here is an older sibling to the Queen Victoria (Canada Scott#75) stamp image that RockySB put on. I find it amazing that in a country not know for its SON cancels that these two cancels are so well placed. Had to have been a concerned collector working in the Morris Street Post office.

Here is another Vicki, Black River, Jamaica squared circle:

Around this time, Black River was Jamaica's second city.

I'll trade the damage for a strike this nice.

Not a bullseye dater, but.....

Actually, bullseye and SON cancels are not that hard to find on early Spanish stamps, and I'll post some here at some point, but this bullseye grill cancel is not the real star here. If you look close you can see it is struck on a pretty dramatic double impression of Scott #45 (Edifil 48A, type II). It's one of my favorite pieces in my collection.

Do SON cancels have to be on a single stamp? How about a block?

Even though this is a very common, and sometimes unsightly, cancel, they really look handsome when they are struck in multiples like this. A lot of times the postal clerk looks like they really took their time to make sure they were struck nicely. This block of 4 has 2 nicely struck Parilla (grill) cancels, in blue, centered on the block between the left and right stamps.

Found this postcard recently. I'm a sucker for colored cancels. Nice SON target cancel and dial in blue on a common 1 cent postcard. I love coming across things like this in boxes of cheap postcards.

Here's a nice one on a British army official from Colchester.

Here's another from Sidcup - a district in south east London.
