Here's a nice SON cancel on a stamp I found in some very cheap, genuine mission kiloware some years ago. Fortunately, the CDS is small enough (21mm diameter) to be complete on this little definitive. There is even a "2" code from the cancel which can be seen in the upper margin. Since Canada lists its postal codes on the internet, it was easy to determine that this "H3C 1S0" cancel is from the Griffintown (southwestern downtown) area of Montreal, Quebec. |

Here is an 1887 S.O.N. cancel from LOJO, Finland. Today, Lojo (Swedish) is more commonly known as Lohja (Finnish), as 95% of the population there are Finnish speakers. Lohja is in the far south of the country. |

This S.O.N. cancel is on a ca. 2000-'01 cover from a medical doctor in Strausberg to a medical journal in Munich. Neither stamp nor cover were cancelled by the automatic equipment, so later it was handstamped "Nachtraeglich entwertet", or "subsequently cancelled" by a postal worker. |

Austrian stamp with Lemberg Bahnhof 1875. Now know as Lviv Ukraine. Shame of the upper right corner, but still a keeper. |

Can someone explain/interpret this cancel? Is it a postal cancel? I don't see any date or place. The stamp is Peru, Scott 171, the 5 centavos Bolivar statue in the 1907 series. Thanks. Don |

I think it is the mark of a regional post office. Eten is a provincial district in Peru, which sounds something like a county in a state in U.S. terminology. Here's something my Google-fu turned up on cover: |

The answer seems to be correct, as far as it goes, but the lettering seems to indicate some specific purpose. The "DE" in place of a date and time is most puzzling, unless it indicates "of Eten". |

Thanks for the comments blcjr and Bookbinder Bob.
The cancel blcjr found looks identical and is used as postal cancel. Seems unusual, though, that no date or place was included. I think Bookbinder Bob's observation that the "DE" might be translated as "of" is correct.
Perhaps, this is a type of mute postmark used for a lesser class of mail.
Still hoping for more information.

Peilenstein (Untersteiermark) 08.5.44 SON cds cancel. After Hitler invaded and dismembered Yugoslavia in April 1941, Slovenia was incorporated into the German Reich. So, Pilstanj, Slovenia became Peilenstein for several years. |
