-29- VELEZ - MALAGA 21.09.06 In this case, "29" the postal zone for the Province of Malaga is at the top of the cancellation. Velez is in the province of Malaga (Costa del Sol). It is located only several kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea. Population is ca. 80,000. The date portion of the cancel is a bit odd because it is oriented vertically, reading bottom to top. |

The destroyer U.S.S. Borie (DD-704) "was launched on July 4, 1944 by Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Kearney, New Jersey...and commissioned on September 21, 1944, Commander N. AdairJr. in command...On August 9, 1945 a kamikaze crashed into Borie's superstructure between the mast and the 5-inch gun director, causing extensive damage, killing 48 men and wounding 66." Hi bookbndrbob Thanks for the information on the USS Borie. Very interesting and thank you for sharing it with us. I just checked the date on the cancel, and it was the day the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, August 6, 1945. Unfortunately the death and destruction on the Borie occurred a few days after Hiroshima, and a few days prior to the Japanese surrender on August 15, 1945. Here is the full cover. |

The cancels on these modern German stamps seems to indicate that they were postmarked (pre-cancelled) before being delivered to the post office or mail center. The cancel on the commemorative is inked, but looks to be mechanically applied (typography), and the date is meaningless (00.00.0). "Entgelt bezahlt" means paid. The cancel on the flowers definitives appears to be inkjet (computer) printed. |

BIORRA 09.9.15 This is another Irish/Celtic language cancel for Biorra (English = Birr). This small town of 5700 is in the geographic center of the country. From Wikipedia, "Biorra, meaning 'plain of water' is a town in County Offaly, Ireland. Between 1620 and 1899 it was known as Parsonstown, after the Parsons family who were the local landowners and hereditary Earls of Rosse." The "15252" on the right side of the stamp is the date the stamp was vended, i.e., "15" as the year 2015, and "252" as the day of the year, or September 9th. The cancellation shows that the stamp was used on the same day it was purchased. |

Here are two more modern Irish "socked on the nose" up-rates by meter. The 68 euro cents meter on these two take the postage paid up to 1.40 euros each. This looks to be a preferred periodical rate. The Celtic "POSTAS IOCHTHA" inscription means postage paid. |
