Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, 21 01 94 This town (population ca. 13000) neat the border of the Irish Republic features an ancient castle. From Wikipedia, "The town's name comes from the Irish: Inis Ceithleann (Ceithleann's Island). This refers to Cethleen, a figure in Irish mythology who may have been a goddess. Local legend has it that Ceithleann was wounded in battle by an arrow and attempted to swim across the River Erne, which surrounds the island, but she never reached the other side, so the island was named in reference to her." |

Aside from being a little high, this is a collectable cancel from Briefzentrum 84. The briefzentrums are mail distribution centers and their cancels seem to have replaced German town cancels. I collect them, though, hoping to put together a set of one from each of the 99 numbered centers. Briefzentrum 84 is from Landshut a town of 70,000 plus situated on the Isar River in Bavaria. It is listed as one of the smaller briefzentren. Don |

Benidorm Suc - 1 14.02.00 Benidorm is a town in Alicante, Spain. It is on the Mediterranean coast, and has historical been known as a fishing village. Today is a Mecca for European vacationers. The "Suc-1" in the cancel refers to the town area, the central business district. From Wikipedia, "In 1952 Benidorm's fishing industry went into decline; this was a factor in encouraging the town council to approve many new development plans aimed at the tourist market. Today the town is Europe's and Spain's biggest holiday resort and responsible for a significant chunk of Spain's large tourist industry, with 5 million tourist arrivals per year." Benidorm's population was around 3500 in 1857, and today it is around 71,000. |

Lahaina, Maui April 13, 1900 Some years ago, the wife and I were staying in Lahaina for several weeks. I thought I would try my hand at cooking some local fish. Drove over to the seafood market and found that the display cases were empty and "clean as a whistle". The manager told me that they didn't keep fish there anymore. They got so much for it in Japan and the U.S. that it was all packed and flown out as soon as it got in. Hmmph! |

Not only giving a nice Vatican City mark, but also giving Pope Nicholas V a philatelic halo. (Someone will probably tell me this was cancelled like this deliberately, but I think it's cool anyway.) |

In Ireland, the domestic postage rate went from 55c to 60c in April of 2013. This 5c meter imprint serves double duty as a cancellation. The Celtic inscription "postas ioctha" means postage paid. |
