Ruanda-Urundi Scott 29 (1927):  Scott 85 (1942):  Both cancelled USUMBURA, the capital city, now Bujumbura in Burundi. The most common town cancel, but still here are two different cancel types from different time periods. |

I'm thoroughly enjoying this thread because it occured to me that cancels can be just for the sake of fun, and can be done on the real-cheap. The stamp with the Japanese crane cancel is pretty amazing. Someone over there sure knew a thing about bringing out a little bit of art and whimsy in the everyday ordinary. |

Malagasy Republic/Madagascar Scott 104 (1925)  Sideways, of course, but a scalloped railway cancel typical of French colonies. It reads TAMATAVE A TANANARIVE / B. So, (city of) Tamatave to (city of) Tananarive. Perhaps there is a different cancel for the trip in the other direction? |

Liberia Scott 64 (1897):  Here, DEUTSCH SEEPOST/LINIE/HAMBURG/WESTAFRIKA/VI./16.10.02 seapost cancel. Postally used Liberian stamps are slightly scarce during this period, but within that group are quite a few of these German seapost cancels. |

Michel Bayern 81 type II. Cancel reads Pirmasens a town that is no longer part of Bavaria. After WW II it became an independant town in Rhineland-Palatinate.  |

STTScott, the first one is called a wheel of fortune cancel. This was available commercially, made by the F.P. Hammond Co. It was used by many towns beginning about 1881, so this can't be pinned down to any one place. Yours is a particularly strong, clear strike. |

United Nations New York Scott 98-99 (1961)  I like the look, obviously, but since these are cancelled first day and I have other SOTN from the same year similarly cancelled, I strongly suspect these were made by and sold by the UN post office. If they did, I have no idea how many years they did this for. |

Sweden Scott 489 (1956):  THE PKP 83 cancel is from a traveling post office (TPO), typically a railway PO though they still have postbuses. The ideal for Swedish collectors are stamps with perfectly centered SOTN postmarks. Close, but apparently no cigar, here. |
