7 July 1905 Minneapolis MN to Wonewoc WI C. E. Wolfenden, president of the Bank of Wonewoc, documents his legal activities on the envelope from attorney Washington Yale. Quote: From Courts and Lawyers in Minneapolis (1906) by Horace B. Hudson:
YALE, Washington, Jr., was born January 7, 1875, at Norwalk, Huron county, Ohio. His father, Charles W. Yale, a descendant of Thomas Yale, (a brother of Elihu Yale, from whom Yale University derived its name) is a capitalist. Washington Yale lived in Ohio until he was thirteen years old, then came to Minneapolis and lived with his great-uncle, Washington Yale, for whom he was named. He attended the Central high school, later the Engineering school of the state university, and finally the Law school, from which he graduated with the class of 1898 and was then admitted to the bar. Mr. Yale's practice has had to do chiefly with commercial and real estate law, including the care of property for both residents and non-residents. During the last three years and at the present time, he has given considerable attention to the erection of modern homes for rental purposes. During his senior year in college, he was Major of the University Cadet Corps. A republican, Mr. Yale has been a member of the Roosevelt Club during the last two campaigns. He is also a member of the Minneapolis Commercial Club, an honorary member of "Scabbard and Blade," the University military society, and a very active member of Plymouth Congrega- tional Church, being secretary of the society and recently a member and chairman of the board of directors of Drummond Hall, one of its missions. He was also a charter member and first secretary and treasurer of Plymouth Club. He married May Wilman Emery, of Waltham, Massachusetts, October 25, 1899. . |

Notice in the Scotten, Dillon Company cover, the machine cancel from Detroit, Michigan shows the year "19" and "26" in distinctly different sizes. In this case it appears as though they may have used slugs from different machines to accurately imprint the year. |

I did notice that but figured the postmaster was just re-cycling the numeral slugs from other devices? Great catch though. |

AUGUST 18th 1846 Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania "stampless" folded letter
The letter's subject matter pertains to Jersey Shore, Pa. rich & historical logging and timber industry. It's asking about land drafts or what I assume are either deal documents or maps and giving advice on purchasing land and selling land. The Prominent names on this document are (to the best of my Wife's and my deciphering abilities)Henry Buchler-Surveyor, M. Baird and a place "Davis Sawmill" is mentioned. The Jamun? Milson or Wilson? At this time there were only a handful of big land owners and those people seem to be popular and usually "turn-up" when it comes to artifacts such as this however I don't find any mention of these particular peoples in the History of Jersey Shore book by Wayne Welshans.

Based on the "e" in "Respectfully" and "required" I think the signer's name is James. Still couldn't say if the last names is Wilson or Milson.
Edit: Also the "s" in "is" a couple of lines up from the signature. |
