Quote: I am very much enjoying the history of your covers littleriverphil Thank you Ciletaliph. I also enjoy telling their stories. Forgot to post a couple of postcards for the 18th. My first example of Caspar's new CDS. Currently provisionally numbered MEN-555. Between 1906 and 1910, most of the post offices in Mendocino county earning more than $500 per year added a receiver. But first up is Alton. Here is the Caspar receiver. Looks a little odd, as the day date and year date are not centered under the month, but are offset. Must have been inexperience with the device as the later strikes of this device have the month, day and year centered. Now that I'm caught up as it were.. Today I have a roughly opened at left side cover from Alton, which has a weak strike of Hum-90, sometime in the 90's, and a good strike of Mem-1140, Hardy's 2nd of 3 circle date stamps, an office that was open 13 years, 1902-1915. |

Perhaps now would be a good time to explain Williams postmark measurement. Using the above Men 555 as an example the description is 1c 31.5 12L 1c = 1 circle 31.5 mm in diameter the 12L (Left) is the nearest distance from the first letter of the town name and the first letter of the state in mm. |

Today is Humboldt county day, two items, one a cover front and the other a real photo post card. First the cover. This is only the front of the cover, other than the postmark, a town and county CDS, I'm not so sure that stamp belongs on this front. A rate marking was used to cancel the stamp, while entirely possible, other Rohnerville obliterators were duplexed at this time period. This CDS (Hum 4350) was used from Aug of 1879 to May of 1881 when it was replaced by another town and county device. The Williams illustration shows HUM 4350 duplexed with a 5 point star. The front also has two holes punched into it. The other item I have for today is a real photo postcard from..(are you ready for this?) Bulwinkle, Cal. No, it's not addressed to Rocky. Located on Little River (sound familiar?) north of Trinidad, This card was mailed about a month after the PO there opened. I also have an early date for this CDS. The Williams EKU is Sep 29 1909 for CDS HUM 1030, Here's mine Today's card, Front and back. |

Quote: Thanks and hello from Humboldt. Bulwinkle, who knew? Right? Bulwinkle became Crandell Sep 9, 1922. Home of the Little River Redwood Company. Have a real photo pc of the Little River Mill, mailed from Trinadad about 2 weeks before the Bulwinkle PO opened. The Bulwinkle PO opened May 7 1909, this photo of the mill was mailed Apr 26 1909 |

Dipping in that balance lot that I mentioned last week (Oct 18) I find a registered cover form Cuffey's Cove. Judging from the number of this letter, a lot of Cuffey's Cove residents sent registered mail. I have 5 covers and a post card from Cuffey's Cove, 4 of the letters were regististered. I"ll give their dates and registered number: Apr 9, 1881...#9 May 3, 1881...#34 Today's cover, Oct 24, 1881,....#41 and an Apr 11, 1882...#19 Postmaster compensation for 1881 was $296.61 Richard W. Helbock in the Compilation Untied States Post Offices Vol I The West, rates this town a 6 on his Scarcity index. The postmark is Williams #Men-960, which is rated a 4 (very scarce) |

After that piece of showy registered business, today's cover From Willits is rather mundane, but shows us the typical loggers handwrighting and spelling. |

At one time the place was named Martin's Ferry. It became Weitchpec 1n 1891 I'm a bit confused by today's cover. I know it was tax time and understand that the letter was probably over the weight limit and so doubled the first class rate, But why was the registration fee paid twice? Nice colorful franking, This was a small town. Postmaster compensation for 1899 was $73.03 |

Ooops, missed one yesterday. Mailed Oct 28, 1894 from Hopland, Cal This town has had two names, twice. The settlement was called Sanel but when the town got a post office (1875) it was called Hopland But in Sep 1890 the name was changed to Sanel The next Sep, 1891, the name was changed back to Hopland. Sanel is a tough postmark! A single small banknote pays the first class postage. |

Ah, a new month! Although I did get a new scanner, I haven't re scanned my Post Cards So today's postmark date will just be a cropped postmark until I re-scan. The first is a partial postmark, all I can read is Fort Bragg Nov 1. The other card is from Duffy, a tiny town on the tracks of the California Western Railroad, about 10 miles east of Fort Bragg. The Williams book rates Duffy as a 3 (scarce) Richard W. Helbock in his United States Post Offices gives Duffy a 5 on his scarcity index! |

Today I'll show you something you won't see many of in an 1889 mail bag. A Hotel cover. Way mail. The cover is hand stamped Revere House Eureka Cal, on the upper right. The only other postal marking are the small round WAY and a San Francisco CDS. There is a partial San Fran rec'd on the back. Pure speculation here, but apparently the sender couldn't get to the post Office to make the day's mail so instead handed it to the stage driver along with a few cents. I did find this view of the Revere House, however it is a copyrighted photo and so has watermarks..my apologies.. http://oldphotoguy.com/p415975071/h...DB#h3cbd68db |

Nice token. I think that the Revere House may have been a boarding house at one time, saw a mention of that while looking for a photo. This cover was part of that balance lot that I mentioned a few weeks ago. |

Just a single card this morning, and sorry that it is a cropped postmark scan. Am in the process of rescanning (new Scanner) but haven't done this card as yet. Mailed 3 years prior to the Duffey pc I showed last week. |
