Today card comes from the end of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad, Albion Branch at Christine, a cover with a handwritten corner of future merchant F H Jarvis. I'll have a lovely corner card from he and his new partner on the 10th. Form Samoa up in Humboldt county I have a cover with two corner cards, one printed the other hand stamped.

Well it looks as if Mr. Jarvis's letter to the Petaluma Incubator Co proved to be profitable, here it is two years and 2 days later and I have another cover to show. Now F H Jarvis has partnered with a Mr. Nichols. They were very successful. They build a beautiful building on Main Street. It is still housing businesses, 10 smaller business now fill the old building. The local bookstore has been in the building for more than 30 years. Rather fitting that the partners are using one of their fairly new corner cards to pay their taxes

Two items for today's date, a cover from Mendocino and a postcard from my Great aunt, Grandmother's sister Marie.

I picked up the cover last year from Community member, a nice cover. The post card is a gem. First it shows Point Arean at its best overall angle (Complete with Aunt Becky's house ( Granddad's aunt). Also shows GGreat grand dad's harness shop

I have two copies of this card, one mailed from Point Arena and the one I'll show was mailed from Manchester, 4 miles north of Point Arena. I had the card for several years before I made the connection to the family. For some reason all the girls of my grandmother's family all went by their middle names. Until I was doing my family tree one weekend and while talking to Granddad's niece, She mentioned the odd habit of all the Iversen girls using their middle names, and it clicked, I knew I had seen Marie I on a postcard. I talked it over with my cousin, and she told me that Marie had attended school with Miss Cuthbertson.

Three covers for the day, hardly know where to begin. I'd normally begin with the oldest cover, but there is no year date on the Ukiah cover, although it is postmarked with MEN-3700 which Ukiah put into to use Feb 24 1879 and retired the device on May 22 1893.

The other two covers are from Humboldt and the first of those comes from Grizzly Bluff. That's right folks, That is a Grizzly on the California Flag, and these two counties were still wild in the 19th century. Which brings me to my last cover of the 19th century, From Thorn, at the very most southwestern spot in the county. This cover was part of a balance lot and the letters in the CDS were already penciled in. Nice group of stamps.

A single cover today from Gans in Humboldt county. A very nice mixed franking on this very scarce cover. Eureka even added their straight line Registered marking (HUM-1780) on the back.

Official Business from the Eureka Post Office. Postmarked with Eureka's 6th recorded town mark William's # Hum 1670, in use from Nov 1 1876 to Nov 20 1885. The Post Office Official entire was in circulation from July 1873 to July 1884. With no other postal markings, all I can say is mailed Nov 15 1876 to 1883.

Today's post card comes from Little River Cal. A part of the Elgin Boyd post card correspondence I stumbled into.

As I mentioned recently, I have a new scanner and have been rebuilding my files. In doing so, I've found a few details about covers or cards that I've shown lately.

A recap since Sept when I began posting again, missed some fun facts.

The Arcata Sep 12 1890 cover is an EKU. 3 years 5 month 8 days!

The Sep 17 Arcata Patriotic? Probably is the listing date in Williams I bought the cover well after the book was published. EKU for Hum 140 is Sep 17 1862

I didn't even show this pc from Bulwinkle, a new EKU for Hum 1030 by 6 days.

Hopland Sep 26 is a new late date, 2 months and 2 days.

The Alderpoint Oct 12 1912 pc has a new EKU of 2 years 9 months.

This Alton Oct 18 1909 post card has an unreported cds. It doesn't match the measurements of any of Alton's 5 reported town marks It is a 1 circle of 30 mm and 14 mm between first letters of town and state. Here is the current Alton listing.

The two town marks that closest match the year are Hum 100 (28.5 15L) and Hum 110 (32.5 17L) Hum 105

On Oct 22, I posted a Bulwinkle cover with the Little River Redwood Co cc. That cover has another unreported town mark, Hum 1045

The Mendocino Nov 8 1893 Jarvis cover is a new EKU by 5 months 16 days.

My great aunts Manchester Nov 12 1911 pc is a new late date by 7 months 5 days.

The Gans Nov 14 1902 cover had a new LKU of 8 months 3 days.

Only the one post card this morning, but it is a new EKU for Manzanita Cal, in Mendocino county. It is earlier than the EKU listed in Williams by 12 days. Not a lot, but I'll take it! :) One of the Elgin children had removed the stamp from this card ( hope they kept collecting) so the stamp has been replaced. Because of the surface of the embossed post card, the postmark didn't imprint completely, leaving the year date incomplete. Salsig became Manzanita on Sep 9 1912 and closed on JUN 15 1915. That leaves us 3 Novembers this could have been mailed 1912, 1913, or 1914. The bottom of the last numeral does not resemble either a 2 or a 4.
Happy Thanksgiving from Manzanita!

The Manzanita card would be better with no stamp rather than a misleading replacement.

Only a single postcard today, but it is half of a pair of cards from the same person to the same person. Again from the southern end of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad at Christine. Other card is on Nov 8th.

Here is a cover I had recorded as March, until I took it from my cover press/drying book ( A pack of 30 watercolor sheets) and noticed the back stamps both said Nov. It is a larger cover that has been cut down. The lower part of Cala is trimmed off, and the back shows about a third missing. It is also 1 month and 14 days earlier than the Williams listed EKU. Why was I pressing and drying it? Needed a bath!

After three days of nothing to post, it is finally time to show this good looking First Bureau mixed franking cover to Germany. This is the only item in all of my little redwood empire postal history collection from the year 1900, and therefore is the first of the 20th last of the 19th century for my collection. I just finished updating my catalogue( currently 525 cards and covers, well 527, a card and a cover in the mail) and for 1890 to 1899 I have 52 items, from 1900 to 1909, 136 items. Just the 1 cover from 1900. This cover was sent by the owner of the then largest drug store in Fort Bragg, probably half of the postcards I have from Fort Bragg were purchased at his store.
