Let me add something a little older to the mix for July 1st -- this one mailed from Portsmouth, New Hampshire and addressed to Francis Bacon in Alfred, Maine is c.1849-52.

A little late for July 4th, but couldn't pass by this "B Free Franklin" Maximum Card without posting it:

For the convenience of those who don't recall the story behind it:

Quote:
As Postmaster of the American Colonies, Benjamin Franklin had use of what is known as a "franking privilege." This privilege allowed him to mail letters free of charge like Congressmen. What is unique about Franklin's frank is that he signed his franking signature on out going mail as "B. Free Franklin." Historians believe that this alludes to his commitment to gaining freedom and independence from the English government.

I have been away for a couple of weeks and have a few backdated covers that I thought might be interesting. A couple have been posted in other threads, but they fit well here.

Yup. Picture saved for future purchase and investigation.
I like those triangles too.

It's fun to search for all these disparate items as I get to see and learn a lot about things I would never even have thought about before.

In the old days, St Louis was home to the Cardinals and broadcast greats and mom used to love to talk stats about the likes of this guy.

Greece has been in the news lately. Here's an older postally used air letter for July 8 from 1952. Odd that there is a preprinted return address in English though.

I am a bit late on this one but ran across it in another box. Seems that I have a lot of these "other boxes". However, it looked interesting, has a great slogan cancel, and also came with an interesting biographical enclosure.
