Just back from seven weeks of doing a favorite thing - driving. From BC to Ontario and south to the Gulf at New Orleans then home following the Mississippi north to Minnesota and into Saskatchewan. Only time I got off the Backroads was Minneapolis to Bismarck.

I'm not about to add cover dates from August and September but I will contribute a few from October to bring me up to date.

As to that cover with the cachet of the Maine Monument in Cuba, here's the story about the text inscribed on that monument:

Quote:
The wording on the Maine monument in Havana describes Maine's sailors as "victims sacrificed to the imperialist greed in its fervor to seize control of Cuba", which "alludes to the theory that U.S. agents deliberately blew up their own ship to create a pretext for declaring war on Spain"

Is that a modern revamping of the original inscription, whatever it was? I don't imagine that the 1928 version had any references to "imperialist greed" nor to the other story that U.S. agents blew up their own ship.

I used this cover in another thread as well with some other interesting comments on it.

And another for October 14. An interesting diamond postal marking applied at some point.

It's the 16th of October, I have my first cup of coffee and the Weather Network on the computer is predicting snow flurries tomorrow. At least I have a cover to post and from someplace warm at that.

And here in the Washington DC Metro area, tomorrow should be partly cloudy with a high of 74 and a 20% chance of rain...

For backroads, another cover from a warm place, a first day of issue for the 3c brown violet Kearny Expedition issue (Scott 944):

Saint Louis, October 18th (the annotation on the cover indicates 1871 but I can't confirm that date).

I really like the colorful New Mexico centennial cachet. Plus Santa Fe is a town along route 66.
