A neat Postage due combination for the 27th.

And there really has been a lot of great letter correspondence lately showing up on the calendar.

Here is a stampless cover for October 28th with a Gales Ferry, Connecticut CDS (30mm). The ASCC only reflects use of this style of postmark in 1854; however, I believe this cover was posted in 1855 because the letter content was written on "Thursday" Oct 25th -- October 25th fell on a Wednesday in 1854. The addressee, Augustus Prentice was born in New London County, CT and established a law practice in New York in 1851, specializing in commercial and corporation law.

Nothing here to compete with that very interesting and well researched stampless cover. However, a modern Airmail envelope, postally used with a neat slogan cancel, is not something that is often retained so it's a bit unusual itself.

An ancillary piece on Augustus Prentice: This 2011 newspaper article refers to a home he built in Staten Island, NY just after the Civil War (and still stands today) at 75 St. Mark's Place:

Also, here's his NY Times obituary from 1905:

I am going to add a couple for October 29 as well. An attractive modern FDC from Hong Kong. Great one for the topical collectors. And a second that is a neat 1930's Air Mail / Special delivery with all the appropriate markings.

I was surprised to not see a US cover for October 23 showing the stamp depicting that famous October 23 1944 naval battle in the Sea of Japan (1994 US Scott#2838 29c Battle of Leyte).

For some odd reason, I don't have too many covers with postmarks from late October. However, I did find this slogan cancel corner cut from a United Nations stamp for October 29th that I'll submit for this month and day. Nothing much special about it, except that UN slogan cancels are much less common than the First Day of Issue varieties, and found it interesting that the UN NY cancel from 1984 contains the slogan line of commemorating the "5th Anniversary of the United Nations Postal Administration in Vienna":

For November 2nd/3d, a Hemlock Grove, Ohio postmarked 2 November (1891) with a 3 November 1891 Washington Courthouse receiving stamp on the reverse. A short bio on the addressee is also included.
