Anyone know what the number on the reverse mean?

The number is probably the count of the limited edition first day covers created by Beverly Hills Cachet Service. By the way, this is noted to be Planty #19 Orange and Green Beverly Hills Cachet.

Apparently, Beverly Hills Cachet Service made these cacheted covers in red and gray, too, but are said to be very scarce and can sometimes command up to 10x the value of the orange and green variety shown in your scan.

Here's a brief history of the Beverly Hills Cachet Service:

Quote:
About Beverly Hills Cachets [Revised 3/8/12]

I like cheques (checks)
Here's one made out on July 9, 1934. But it's stamped on the 10th, 16th and 17th. That averages out to the 9th, doesn't it? Wait I'll check with my wife, she does the finances.

Ok, here's a real cover from July 9, 1960 (previously shown)

The sender Joseph Josselson is list as having donated 11 miscellaneous US and foreign philatelic covers to the National Collection in the Smithsonian Institute in 1963.

Recently posted this in another thread, but since it's postmarked July 10, might as well post it here. It a cover from the USS Colorado while she was in the Howland Island area conducting search & rescue operations looking for Amelia Earhart & Fred Noonan. Pretty cool.

July 11, 1927 Minneapolis Veteran's Hospital to Shoemaker Hall at St Cloud Teachers' College MN

Another beat up cover but I like the center emblem for the Disabled American Veterans, World War... with no need for a number after it.

Even more for July 11th:

From my perspective, July 11, 1945 was a great day in U.S. philatelic history!

July 12,1991 Olympics in Los Angeles FDC

I like the sense of motion that the stamp artist captured. (The cachet artist not so much... the runner looks as if he may even miss the hurdle.)

I'm going out of town for awhile so I'll jump the gun and add another beat up one for tomorrow too.

July 13,1884 New York to Minneapolis
