According to this Wiki excerpt the Wilkes-Barre was on a goodwill cruise to England and Norway when the previously posted postcards were sent: Quote: [The]Wilkes-Barre made a goodwill cruise to England and Norway; underway on 17 February 1947, she reached Plymouth, England, on the 27th. She then operated in the waters of the British Isles throughout March and April and made one trip to Bergen, Norway, before returning to the United States for eventual assignment to the United States Reserve Fleet. Decommissioned on 9 October 1947, Wilkes-Barre was simultaneously placed in reserve at Philadelphia. |

March 5 1956, my smallest cover, 3.5 x 2.25 inches Quote: wikipedia: Mackey Airlines, also known as Mackey International Airlines, was an airline which mainly served Florida and The Bahamas. Flights flew primarily out of West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami to a number of islands in the Bahamas and to Turks and Caicos.
Mackey Airlines was founded by former stunt pilot and United States Air Force Colonel Joseph C. Mackey on September 30, 1946. The airline was bought out by Eastern Airlines in 1967. "Colonel Joe" soon began a new company, Mackey International Airlines. In 1977, Mackey's headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, Florida was the target of a bombing attributed to Cuban anti-Castro activity in the United States.[1][2] Mackey International Airlines ceased operations in 1981.[3] http://www.mackeyairlines.com/default.asp |

March 9 1945 http://www.electronicvalley.org/mat...s/index.html Quote: The Katharine Matthies Foundation is the legacy of Miss Katharine Matthies, a lifelong Seymour resident and benefactor. She was born August 26, 1903, the daughter of George E. Matthies and Annie Wooster Matthies. Members of her family were leading industrialists in Seymour throughout much of the past century. They played a major role in the economic development of the Town of Seymour.
Miss Matthies lived a very active life and had a wide range of interests. She collected books, stamps, coins, paintings, jewelry and Netsukes. Among her pursuits were photography, trout fishing and an enjoyment of the outdoors. She was very active in the national, state and local societies of the Daughters of the American Revolution. In addition, she served for many years on the Seymour Board of Library Directors. She was involved with many community and charitable activities and supported many youth programs. Katharine Matthies was an extremely generous individual and benefactor of her community. The Foundation continues that spirit of philanthropy that marked her lifetime.
The Foundation, established in 1987 following the death of Miss Matthies, was left in trust in her estate to support programs that meet social and community needs. Foundation assets now total over $17,000,000. Since its' creation, the Foundation has awarded grants totaling more than $5.5 million to fund projects that serve the towns of Seymour, Oxford, Beacon Falls, Ansonia, Shelton and Derby.
Applications, which are accepted from tax exempt, non-profit organizations, are reviewed by a five member advisory committee made up of local residents who are active in many organizations and civic affairs. The committee's recommendations are considered by Bank of America as Trustee and grants are awarded annually to qualified organizations. |

That's a cute WWII era card. Does anyone know anything about the manufacturer, WIPCO (a/k/a Wipco Greeting Card Company)? Apparently they were a popular greeting card company back in the day but surprising little information seems available on the internet about them. |

April 16 1955 First KLM flight from Amsterdam to Kabul Although the postmark says April 16, the cachet says May 5... And the backstamp says May 11. Anyone know why? Did this mail run really take 3 weeks? Oops! I posted this a day early. I guess the timing questions infected me too! |
