Ripoll (90 km N of Barcelona), yesterday 05/18/2013. Philatelic exhibition, commemorative of the town being 2013 Catalan Culture Capital. The stamp shows two parade giants ("gegants" in Catalan) honoring IX century Count Guifré I of Barcelona (considered the father of Catalan Nation) and his wife. Ripoll, with its Romanic monastery, is also considered to be the birthplace of Catalan Nationhood. |

More about George M. Martin (philatelist): Quote: George Maybee Martin (June 18, 1906 – February 21, 1994) Spokane, Washington
Martin actively supported organized philately both nationally and in his Pacific Northwest. He served the many stamp clubs that make up the Northwest Federation of Stamp Clubs, which include clubs in the U.S. Pacific Northwest and in Western Canada. He was active in its annual Pacific International Philatelic Exhibition (PIPEX).
For his long service to the area, Martin was named NFSC Distinguished Philatelist in 1962. He was elected to the Washington State Philatelic Hall of Fame in 1966. In June 1986 the Yakima Valley Stamp Club honored him by calling its exhibition MARTINPEX, with a special post office cancel that described him as author, historian, philatelist and philanthropist.
Martin was a specialist collector of U.S. postal cards and edited the first U. S. Postal Card Catalog (1955) for the United Postal Stationery Society. He worked on subsequent editions for the next decade. Martin served the APS in many posts, including the Expert Committee, Recruiting Committee and the Speakers Bureau. He also was an accredited judge, and participated on many juries. He served as APS Counsel (later Senior Counsel) from 1965 until his death.
He was a founding member of American Philatelic Research Library and served as trustee for 14 years, until 1983. He also was a founding member of the APS Writers Unit 30 and served as its president from 1969 to 1973. In 1973, in recognition of his work with young collectors, the Junior Division of the Writers Unit presented him with a special Silver Medal bearing the Writers Unit logo. Martin wore this with pride at many philatelic events. He received the Luff Award in 1974 for Outstanding Service to the Society. |

A couple of other interesting observations about the June 29, 1960 postal card addressed to George M. Martin:
1. The machine cancel is a unique slogan cancel that should read ABILITY COUNTS/EMPLOY THE HANDICAPPED. That postmark was used in many places through the 1970s, so it saw more than a decade of use.
2. Its also interesting that the postcard seems to have been run through the machine canceller twice. The first time (I think) was the partial impression, in which the CDS suggests was from Seattle, Washington (5) at 7 PM; the second impression (I think) is the slogan cancel in which the CDS is Seattle, Washington (8) at 8:30 PM. Presumably the numbers represent a different machine and the secondary cancel was prompted by the fact that the first cancellation attempt didn't completely strike the postal card indicia and/or the stamp applied next to it. |

July 2nd to 10th, 1983, "6th Catalan Youth and Children Philatelic Week", in Vic (Central Catalonia). Organized by the Vic's Philatelic Association. The stamp on the cover commemorates the 50th anniversary of Barcelona's stamps. |

A modern Canada cover postmarked yesterday, Tuesday, August 13, 2013 in Halifax, NS, Canada, sent to Halifax, NS, showing The Tragically Hip rock band on a 2013 Recording Artists stamp. Cancelled at the Post Office with a 6-digit POCON cancel and then again at the sorting plant here with a ink-jet spray-on cancel, machine 7757, shoen under the Canada Post lifting wing symbol. |

I'm over an hour early with these, but I'll probably forget tomorrow, so here are two post cards mailed on August 15, on in 1908 and the other in 1910. Both to the same lady, Miss Ethel Eden. If it's any consolation, the 1910 card was written on August 13, so that averages out to the 14th, today's date. |

15 August 1942, from APS Convention in Cleveland OH to Pasadena CA 15 August 1955, Gravenhage Netherlands to Westwood Village CA Note the light emerging from the ocular lens, ready to blind the microscopist. Many countries issued stamps on fighting cancer that year. Stamps from some other countries show the light emerging from the objective lens. I suppose the artists intended to "shine light on cancer" but neither way would have allowed the researcher to see the specimen on the slide! |
