Any idea what this cancel is?

It brings to mind a Maltese cancel that was used as a paquebot or ship mail cancel, with a Maltese cross inside a circle. My mind is not filling in the missing lines...

Thanks for any ideas. A picture of the Valletta paquebot cancel that I'm referring to would be great, too, if you can decipher my description.

C.

[edit: This is the scan I was thinking of...not mine, and I can't remember where I picked it up...I had saved it under Valletta instead of Malta. Having it in front of me lets me fill in the lines that weren't making sense in the KGV stamp, above. I think they are the same, or at least very similar. ]

I've posted a swag of these under Postmarks Cj
I don't think they were ever identified particularly.

The Tasmanian is a real Wow!
a very unusual marking indeed.

Sundry info FYI

Barred A25 and "M"

So they're that common...hunh...I guess I should go back through my used Malta. Maybe I have more of them that I didn't recognize or pay attention to.

No rumors or speculation that they are of an incoming-ship-mail or paquebot nature?

It was seeing that Tasmania that woke me up to them. What a honey.

Not that I know of,

certainly is a doozy on the Tasmanian,
brickbats to the person who soaked it off cover.

I remember on another NG we had a dickens of a time
id'ing a scottish "brunswick star" on a German stamp.
Your Tasmanian is similar in that it has taken the Maltese strike.
A rare occurrence I should think.
Yours is probably the only one in existence :)

I wish it were mine...

Scan of a Brunswick star on a German stamp, perhaps? They're great cancels.

It is shown here as a Valletta cancel:

http://www.emmsaid.com/villagepostmarks.htm

Scroll down to Valletta and you will see this:

g) Maltese Cross in single ring with G.P.O. in the inner circle with no date. Diameter 27mm. Used from 1894 to 1922.

Perhaps is was used on paquebot covers (as the per the Tasmania stamp).

Thanks for the fantastic link, Bee. I tried to buy Maltese revenues from them a while back, but never explored the rest of the available information.

They could use a little search engine optimization, as I went several Google pages deep on several different search strings without running across that link. (Or I could use remedial search help...also a possibility.)

The postmark in question seems to have been mainly used for registered letters.
